Action flicks

Ok, this probably got discussed somewhere, but I don't see anything in the archives.

I'm looking for some good action type flicks. And feel free to throw in good martial art flicks as well.

I'm esspecially looking for Hong Kong type stuff, but only because I tend to hear the most about stuff from there. Any other places to check out?

I always recommend "The Legend of Drunken Master", a Kung Fu film featuring Jackie Chan at his physical peak.

The Strobe

John Woo's "The Killer".

It's the action flick to end all action flicks: it looks great, it's well acted, actually has a decent plot, is ridiculously operatic and over the top, and kicks vast amounts of butt.

But even _I_ got tired of the noise of gunfire by the end of it...

Jet Li's Fist of Legend is his finest performance in my humble opinion. "You see, if you redirect your opponent's energy, you force him to change. So in essence he defeats himself."

A Better Tomorrow 1 & 2 are Johnny Woo flicks worthy of praise. You can't go wrong with Chow Yun Fat.

A lot of Jackie Chan's flicks are good for a laugh. Drunken Master 2, Wheels On Meals, Armour Of God, Operation Condor, Police Story...they all have some pretty gobsmacking stuntwork in them.

In the West, I maintain that the original Die Hard is one of the finest action films ever made. Brilliantly constructed.

Iron Monkey is very good and in theatres right now.

I also second the suggestion of Duel To The Death, which has great sword work.

Salute of the Jugger.

Low budget, plotless, brilliant.

And yes, I think plotlessness is a good thing in an action-movie; they're not plot driven. They're event driven, the plot is just a relatively inconvenient distraction that gets you from one fight/special effect/stunt to the next. The best action movies are those with little to no plot.

Assualt on Precinct 13 is pretty fun. In fact so is Escape From New York, and Big Trouble in Little China, all by schlock maestro John Carpenter.

Beg, steal, borrow or illegally duplicate a copy of "Peking Opera Blues", by Tsui Hark.
It also goes by the original title of "DoMa Den".

That, and "A Chinese Ghost Story", again by Tsui Hark.

I heartily recommend "The Boondock Saints". For some stupid reason, you can only rent it @ Blockbuster here in the US. It stars Sean Patrick Flanery + Norman Reedus as a pair of Irish-American twins who take it upon themselves to rid the world of the foul + corrupt. If that's not enough, it's got Appleton, Wisconsin's very own Willem Dafoe as a tough-as-nails Gay FBI agent + Billy Connelly as the biggest bad-azz mofo I've seen on the screen in a long time. Here's the Internet Movie Database listing for anybody that's interested....

All of JC's films are great Action Films!!

The Invisibles is nothing but a cheap knock-off of "They Live!" anyway.

call me a cheeser, but Hard Boiledis still Woo's best film, and is also the best straight action film ever.

I forgot about that one. A year or so ago my brother picked that movie up at Blockbuster for some unknown reason. I came in part way through it, and then watched the whole thing later. I deffinetly need to look into seeing that again.

I acctually saw this last night. Suddenly Die Hard looks almost calm and peaceful.

I'm watching Legend of Drunken Master tonight. Anyone seen the "Once Upon A Time In China" series? Is the whole series good? Or just select parts of it?

Thanks for all the reccomendations people. It's exactly what I was looking for.

Jackie Chans tongue in cheek adaptation of the Japanese anime City Hunter. A tribute to the 3 Stooges that managed to offend otaku everywhere (a good thing in this case).

The British dub is great and the Street Fighter sceen is beyond brilliant. The action is amazing and the comedy is top notch. I've never laughed so hard in my life. Highly recommended.

The first two are great. The third has an extended series of what I can only describe as muppet-fu, which has an appeal, but in an entirely different vein.

Um, is that as cool as it sounds? I'm trying to visualize "muppet-fu"

boondock saints was awesome, and shot in my neighborhood...we eat in the cafe they hang out in/shoot bartenders in. also, the father just ended up in a gas station commercial here. about the movie - it was the best legitimate action hero movie i've seen...its a movie that could be adapted into a comic book.
