Ive been devouring horror movies, rushing to every haunted house I could get to during halloween, riding every roller coaster in every park Ive ever gone to, indulging in anything that could possibly induce a scare in me since I was a small child (save riding coasters, natch)

but I seem to have seen everything that is worthwhile (and many that arent) that can be found on the local video stores shelves - take me a bit farther and tell me the one video you would recommend for a scare

..please

The original The Haunting.

Utterly terrifying, without doing anything new or unusual. Just by being goood.

'Don't Look Now' always does it for me, but you've already seen it, right?

I second the motion for both "The Haunting" and "Don't Look Now". Classics both.

More recently, I was severely scared by watching "The Ring" one night.
It's granted to rise a few hair - expecially if you watch it at home and on tape.

blood simple. on your own, in a darkened room. on a small screen. it's so...claustrophobic. though i haven't seen the directors cut yet.

the innocents. adaptation of henry james' turn of the screw with deborah kerr. it's a little dated and hammy, but the little boy will make your skin crawl.

the spiral staircase. from the 40s. atmospheric and creepy.

touch of evil. orson welles is a creepy muthafucka in it.

maybe these should go into the fucked-up films thread too... course, if'n y'really wanna cringe, you'd watch charlie sheen movies, wouldn't you?

Good idea. I was just about to come out of the vestibule wearing my usher's uniform (not House Of, but will do in a pinch) holding a big neon sign that says This Way To Fucked-Up Movies!

I reckon they'll be what yer looking for, bitchkittie.

Though Kooks; big thumbs up to A Touch Of Evil. Fuuuuck. All that and Marlene Dietrich.

actually, Im quite ashamed to say I havent. I looked for both it and the original haunting, which I believe Ive seen before, ages ago - neither was to be found on the shelves. which is why I need your help! I also looked for the gore-fests (or generally unpleasant movies) that were listed in the other thread, to no avail

and thanks to the rest of you, Ive written these all down and will look for them on my next trip to the video store...although I think I might have to either order them or look in a larger, cooler store

I appreciate it!
