Um...Moderation?

Maybe it's just me...but perhaps this board needs a smidgen of a scintilla more moderation? Just an iota, perhaps?

Or perhaps I need a refresher course on what exactly it is Moderators do (and don't do).

What do other people think?

Part of the point of this place is that there are no taboos... just peers, who will let you know in short order if you're being an eedjit with a ten-page explanation as to why.

everything in moderation, especially moderation.

Interesting question. I think that currently moderators primarily delete old or duplicate threads, move things between the topic areas depending on relevance, and perform other largely administrative tasks, and are also, particularly in the less trafficked areas of the site, asked to stimulate discussion with new topics.

So, for example, threads like "bears" in the Head Shop might be moved to the Conversation. There is an argument that some topics or treatments are too inconsequential for the Converstaion, for example "Women", which started bad and got worse.

Problem being, where does one stop? Censoring swearwords? Not allowing Laila or Chrome to express their *ahem* opinions? banning Pin because he is too young, or JtB because he is a Marillion fan?

It's your basic pandora's box...

Bear in mind that the one time Tom ever took serious disciplinary action against somebody, it occasioned page after page of soul-searching. We're basically a wooly liberal lot.

Ierne: it might be more helpful if you could tell us where you think the board needs moderation... it could be that it's just in a few forums, in which case the problem can be sorted out forum by forum. Personally I find that there's nothing for me to do in Books, apart from change the odd thread title, and start threads that no one replies to... humbug...

This might be a good time for me to note that at present, you can move topics out of your forum as Moderator but not into it. Which as Mod of the Switchboard is mildly frustrating, as stuff that (I might think) belongs there often ends up in the Head Shop, which is curently without a Moderator. But it's not *that* big a deal. I doubt I'd chuck anything out of the Switchboard unless it was obviously nonsense, and even then there's some leeway.

I've never been called upon to do anything in Music, except close a faulty Radiohead thread, and I only did that to exercise my power..

Say, I got stripped of moderatorhood when my ID collapsed. Any chance of getting back in the game?

Of course. You were laboratory right?

Yep.
Of course, now I have to bleach *another* coat until it's more-or-less spotlessly white. Still got the latex gloves, though.

Who moderates the moderators?
(Sorry, I know that would've worked better in Latin, but I don't know any. Although I think it would have started with "quip". or "quis". Or something else.)
Like it the way it is, tho' as previously mentioned, the "Women" thread was kind of dumb. Although it (in the time I was studiously ignoring it) did seem to become more interesting. Though at the same time very unpleasant. There's definitely impassioned debate there, though. For good or ill.
