Dune - the mini-series

Has this thread been done before? The 6 hour 'Dune' series with William Hurt just started (again? I only recently got access to the wonders of digital, so I don't know) on the UK Sci-Fi channel last night... I didn't watch the whole thing (I video-ed it for later consumption)...but I found what I did see of it a little depressing... So many hours to work with, so much scope for making something genuinely cool, and...
The casting was, in my opinion, generally pretty bad...the emphasis was *all wrong* - where, for instance, was the drama and menace in the gom jabbar scene? and there were a load of little details, or rather, omissions, that got right up my nose (like the fact you can't see Yueh's symbol of Imperial conditioning, because his forehead is covered...and where are the sapho stains on the lips of the mentats?). David Lynch is looking better all the time...

It's just not the same without the mad hair and the boils [kind of like me really]. And the cat's milk antedote. WOT NO SHEAR?

I saw the first two sets on video. Didn't make me want to rush out and rent the third one. Love the Lynch though.

Nice and strange...

at first i looked forward to the miniseries cause because while lynchs film itself was pretty good it wasn't a goo adaption of thenovel. i thought that with six hours and umpteen million more dollars you could get te whole thing in there. i was wrong. lynches version is so much better. all in all, though, they set eachother off well-filling in and expanding spaces the other ignores.

God, if Lynch's is better, it must be awful.

The Sandworms in the Lynch were embarassing. The Lynch tried very hard, but I really hated it. Especially Sean Young.

The shield effect was BRILLIANT though.

The first two hour thing is being repeated tonight on Sci-fi at midnight, so you'll have to miss the last five minutes of Monty Python on Paramount

Geez, even when I've been stoned and dosed out of my mind, I still thought the Lynch version was incredibly poor.

Nostalgia, as always, rears it's ugly head. If someone did it first than it just must be best, right? Just like Star Trek?

Sorry, I just thought someone should defend the mini-series!

See, now, that's the thing...I never really liked the Lynch all that much, you know? Just, the mini-series, well... sigh..

I've seen the first episode and have enjoyed it immensely, though I think William Hurt needs to be given a role at some point that allows him to show emotion, just to prove he still can.

Not too sure about the bloke playing Paul, he's either pretty good or really irritating. They've stayed more faithful though they haven't explained about the Voice. But they explain the politics involved, whereas Lynch kind of glossed over that for a war film.

Is the Lynch any relation to the Chad from 'Charley's Angels'? Or the Grinch who reportedly stole Christmas?

Ok...just watched the second episode, and it was not nearly so annoying. Still not *fantastic*, but watchable...not a complete waste after all.

paleface: If you hated the lynch sandworms prepare to be disappointed, the series worms are completely shit, esp. the embarassing glove-puppet little ones.

The series has explained about 3 lines of the book that lynch didnt fit in, and missed out more. The miscast is chronic, with the Harkonnens particularly played by fuckwits. If you thought Kyle lacked charisma as muad'dib, prepare to want him back. The mentads are rubbish. The saddukar are even worse.
The way Lynch carved up the novel, there was an obvious opportunity to put much more in the series, but there's almost nothing new here. The production is entirely influenced by the movie's look & structure, but without any of the surrealism, threat, flair, etc.
All this series does is make it virtually impossible for someone talented to film this story for another 20 years.

I pretty much agree with you... but I guess I am over the initial annoyance...

Someone, surely, could do a wonderful job of it, given six hours... so much potential..

my only real problem with the series is the terribly obvious re use of footage throughout--i feel like i saw the same harkonnen garage blow up like 20 time in one watching of it

i got the dvd set on sale when it was released, i thinks its good stuff overall
