I think True Romance shows this idea well. Every character has his/her own story which seemed to have been stolen from other films, Tarantino`s video shop days shining through.
It helped that even the most minor charector is played by a big star, eg Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken and Dennis Hoppper.
Watch it again ever single charector is from another film.
