tom, what about shutting down the board for however long, at intervals, but leaving up just the immensely informative and emotionally essential special reports section?

I'm not going to shut the board down until (at the very earliest) this time next week - but I'll look into the possibility of just closing off the inessential parts of the site.

What do people think the inessential parts of the site ARE, by the way. I'd say the Conversation should go, but it occurs to me that people would probably just post irrelevant information to the other fora more, which would be frustrating. Perhaps I should shut down the entire Spectacle for a while and see what effect that has (if any). All opinions appreciated.

I think that you should have the link to Amazon.com on all of the Spectacle pages. Right now the only place its located is the Webzine, right? If there was a link on the Music page it might encourage people to go buy that Le Tigre CD they've been hearing so much about. Same for books, comics (Amazon has trades) and film.

It'd be worthwhile posting the "how to make your Amazon link a Barbelith-fundin' link" post, Tom, too. Most of the music-recommending threads talk about specific albums; maybe if people knew how to turn regular Amazon.com/.co.uk links into ones that flow cash back into the site, there'd be a bit more linking of stuff going on? Certainly makes those purchases easier, too, a nice clickable link...

Ditto for Books & Film &c, I'd say?

I don't know if you can really say that any part of the place is inessential. The conversation is the fluffiest, but I think the other forums are just as valid. I don't know (unless it's heavily moderated during the blackout period) if only having a special-section-available-only version of barbelith would mean that people remain on-topic there, either; I have a sneaking suspicion that the level of unrelated posting could skyrocket there, too...

But then, I would say that, about the spectacle being important n'all.

Is it really a problem of too many forums? More than likely people will probably post just as much, but in a narrower set of forums.

Do whatever you feel is necessary, Tom. Put on the Dictator Hat. Purge! Pillage! Destroy!

Oh god. Trust me. You don't want that.
