Footballers' Wives

Utter trash of the very best kind - and a little too zeitgeisty for ITV, really. A sort of 'Dynasty'-meets-'Dream Team' cocktail of dense-as-fuck footballers (including hilariously obvious semi-parodies of George Best, Ian Wright and the Beckhams), their dreaming-and-scheming wives, gratuitous shower shots and the tackiest interiors this side of 'Changing Rooms'.

Germane Greer 'deconstructed' it in the Guardian a few weeks back; have tried to find and link to it, but unsuccessful.

Anyone else managed to find the article I'm talking about?

Cheers, SFD! 'Footballers' Wives' must be getting near the end of its run now, but there'll hopefully be a second series...

It is probably the mightiest show on television right now... I can't get over the resemblance between "moo-ha-ha!"-ing anti-hero Jason Turner (an almost Shakespearean villain, now God stand up for bastards) and junglist has-been Goldie. Plus I love the fact that there's so little football in the show - a masterstroke.

Jason and his mistress-of-the-stricken-stare wife are the Macbeths, aren't they?

I just like the way the ridiculousness of the show has been built up with each episode: first Chardonnay's inflammable breastesses, then the nurse molesting poor comatose Frank, now Frank's disturbing flashbacks and the Cruela De Ville clone agent...

Plus, I dig the way the ponytailed Italian guy and the really thick guy's wife are clearly meant to parallel Eric Cantona and Leslie Ash. "He's French, he's flash, he's..."

funny actually ganesh cos I think this series could be so much better - I mean trashier etc. I think its a wee bitty dull.

but then I've only seen 10 minutes or so of the entire series.

god there really is fuckall to watch on the box these days.

Sure. I think upping the trash quotient would be a good way to go...

Haven't watched it myself. When I saw that one of the characters was a woman calling herself Chardonnay I nearly chucked the telly guide in the bin. I mean, we're supposed to be thinking "Ha! Isn't that just like a nouveu riche bimbo, trying to sound sophisticated?" when actually the effect is more "Ha! Isn't that just like a smug upper-middle-class twart of a scriptwriter?"

Plus, there's always a chance I might actually see someone playing football <wince>.

There really isn't much of a chance of that at all...

Funnily, "Char" is probably the most sympathetic character in the show. Admittedly, this is only because basically all of the characters are either a) stupid, b) evil, or c) stupid and evil.

Oh, I dunno. Donna's nice - and scary-stary Tanya's the bee's knees...

Football? Pfft.
