Speaking of all of this. Anyone reccomend a good biography of Leary? Like to get to know the legend a bit more. Thanks.
He wrote a book about his prison escape and antics in algiers called 'diary of a hope fiend'... but that only covers a short period of time.
yeah the documentary sucked. it all focused on his stuff while at harvard pretty much, which in my opinion was while he was... just getting warmed up, for want of a better phrase. It didn't cover his philosophy, all they said about the last 30 years of his life was 'oh,and then he did some stuff for 30 years, some of which was interesting- and he liked computers, y'know...'
And they should have interviewed RAW. And RU Sirius, for that matter... I mean, these people co-wrote books with him, fer fucks sake!
Even though I am a big fan of him, I think he was a little fucked up sexually (no more than any of the rest of us though ) they just wanted to go- oh, here was this smart psychologist who got fucked up on drugs and couldn't relate to women that well...
It bordered on character assassination. And to some extent we do need to see another side to him than the saint-of-the-counterculture image thats put across, but doing a 'ooh, he's the most dangerous man in america, look' doco is NOT what the world needs.
Its times like this I wish I were a documentary-filmmaker....
<I'm still a tad drunk while I write this, so apologies if I'm somewhat incoherant...I hope at least some of that made sense.> |
