Just a fundraising idea I had, that could be a goer: why not buy the server a drink whenever there's a barbmeet?

Idea's this: over the course of the night, whoever goes puts the equivalent cash value of a drink they'd have into an envelope, which gets sent to Tom, or put onto PayPal. It'd pay for hosting pretty well, given that there's at least one gathering per month/month-and-a-half, I guess.

Think about it. You could always rationalise it away by saying that the drink you buy the server is the one that'll be coming back up at the end of the night, anyway...

Thoughts?

works for me.

as long as no one loses/spends the money in a moment of drunkeness...

You realise that if we buy Barbelith too many drinks, it will probably try to have sex with us? That could be really, really, unpleasant.

It's amazing what can be done with cgi.

Seriously though - I think it's a good idea. And as regards the spending of the money - if it's counted out at the end of the night and posted to the board by a couple of people who were there, that shouldn't be much of a problem? At least, when the envelope reaches Tom with two moths and a button in it, we'll know who to blame...

I think we all hold you in high regard here - we wouldn't suspect you of deliberately putting forth a ringer...

I see no reason why not. It does sort of shift the emphasis towards the Barbelith IRL social club, but some money is better than no money...

Although it does rather favour those for whom the cost of a pint is not a big deal, i.e. the ones who have capitalist pig jobs and are betraying the revolution...

Yeah, but you've got The Man's numbers, Haus... surely you can rip off a cruet or two from His place?

I know it's more social - but I figured that people might be more disposed towards being parted from their cash in a social setting; it seems a bit more personal than a PayPal donation - which is still a Good Thing, though. I guess it's the whole "hey, look at what the board did! It done brought us all together!" kind of soft-and-cheesy feel.

And, of course, people will more likely give cash when pissed. Fact.

yes mate
paypal don't work for me that much as i'm living without the right to have my own check or paiement card, just can take cash out of machines. so online buy, not for me, uh...
but i believe i'm a prank' as i promised to the CoaterPowerGuy to send him £, and that both times i asked my bank guy to do it, my account was like Annihilus ass : big-fat-hole.
so, mister Coates, as i said before, i'm a piece of shit, sure, but a piece of shit who wanna send you money. no paypal. no. can't.

Barbelith Social Club? Swankey!

Good idea Rothkoid although for us hard up (soon to be ) students it would a stretch.

Alternate idea: couldnt someone just bring an envelope and everyone puts whatever change they have at the end of the nite in there?

You're not alone; I'm beginning to think that the word barbelith means, in some forgotten language, "the state of having the arse out of one's pants".

But yes. Envelope and donations of any sort would be a good thing; I guess I just thought it'd be a shame to waste the social opportunities...

bumpity bump

seeing as there's a big meet planned for the weekend, who is willing to collect the cash. i will if i make it, but it would be better for someone who has more regular contact with tom to hold onto it.

it doesn't even have to be the price of a drink from each of us, i reckon. a quid each oughtta be pretty good -- works out around just over 20-25 quid, which would do for at least a month or two extra bandwidth...

Could whoever is prepared to do this (IF they are prepared to do this, and i'm not advocating ANYONE do it), put the money directly into Paypal when they get home by credit card or something? It's important I think to have a way to check the money that's come in and out. That way I can track what's coming in and out in a really clear and obvious way.
