<<Bitter and twisted>> For those of you snooty fuckers who can afford Film Four (Its shit anyway), check out 'Aguirre:Wrath of God' on Wednesday night/early Thusrday morning. <</Bitter and Twisted>>

I've mentioned it a couple of times before and is definitely one of my favourite films. Werner Herzog directs Klaus Kinski as a 16th Century Spanish Conquistador whose poppadum slowly loses its mango chutney as he descends into megalomaniacal madness. Made in 1972, it's influenced loads of films, from Apocalypse Now and The Mission, to jokes in the Simpsons.

Check it out and let us know what you think!

There's bits and pieces here, in a DVD review.

I still haven't seen that, but really want to.

I've not seen it...

...but I found it on IMBD, here.

I'll try and get hold of it through Amazon.

The funny thing is, all narratives of Herzog films begin: "Few movies have as troubled a production history as Werner Herzog's XXX.... "

this page is quite interesting. the dvd seems to have all the features, so it looks like a worthwhile pick.

i found out about the difficulties of making the film from an article in the now sadly defunct neon magazine. as well as the border war between peru and ecuador, the local extras were also apparentlt press-ganged into a murderous chinese communist cult. i can't find the info on that though. more's the pity.

quote: Klaus Kinski ... descends into megalomaniacal madness.

So he's just playing himself then?

It's a brilliant and very weird piece of film-making, right enough, and the soundtrack's excellent.

Does go on though. He does his mad stary scary thing bloody well, Kinski, but he doesn't give you a lot of light to synergise the shade.

If I had FilmFour I'd watch it again though, with relish.
