What TV do you watch, and why?

Haus about we all give each other a big lovely huggle?

A bit like the "how much TV do you watch"? thread, and inspired this time around by "no cable/TV", and Flux's continued defence of the art that is television programming, I was wondering what sort of viewing habits barbeloids had. How much time do you spend in front of the TV? What do you watch? Do you get pulled in for whole evenings, or watch a single programme and then turn off the set?

Day by day, I watch:

Monday: The Office. Well, actually I usually tape it and watch it on some other day, but the principle is there. Superior, character-based comedy, and one of few programs that actually manages to be funny and tragic at the same time.

Tuesday: Nothing.

Wednesday: Smallville. As above - usually taped and watched at some other point. I don't know...it's fun and it reminds me of Buffy. Plus, Michael Rosenbaum is in it, making it officially mighty.

Thursday. Buffy and Angel. W00t!

Friday - generally in too late to catch any Friday night TV, and post-pub TV is just too depressing. Besides, Friends and Frasier have rather lost their charm (memory of Flyboy and I in the pub last night, discussing the fact that there is now an entire generation for whom Friends has always been pure evil).

Saturday - The only time I would generally setich the TV on to see if there is anything on, and the time Channel 5 really comes into its own. BUt the only thing I will try to watch is Atlantis High, because it's just so fucking absurd, and reminds me fondly of other fucking absurd Aussie kid's drama from my childhood.

Oh, and I occasionally feel tempted if awake to suffer the Codename:Eternity/Crusade utter shit double bill, but sanity inevitably prevails.

Sunday: Since Channel 4 stopped showing WWF Heat, nothing much...

It seems that I generally watch things that are a) geeky as hell and b) very *televisual* - things that could never really be books or films.

How about you?

Sod all. Some documentaries and the odd filum.

Oh, but those Thursday nights....

BA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NAAH NAAAH NAAAAAH!

Buffy's such a fun group thing. Everyone skins up and pre-empts the plot, and goes on about how they "understand that Riley's a good sunshine Jock and Buffy's gotta get w/ a Jock, cause she's got a bit of the cheerleader in her, but...isn't it great now he's fucked off?" and...aaaahh....

I watch far too much TV... but there are very few specific programmes I actually set out to watch. At the moment, I am watching the repeats of 'Bob and Rose' on ITV2 on Sunday nights, because I didn't catch it the first time round. Buffy on Thursdays. That may very well be it for my regular viewing. I occasionally catch 'As If' if I notice that it is on, 'cause I am a sucker for teen drama thingies, making up vicariously for my anti-social youth, no doubt. I am a faddy viewer though - I used to watch 'Diagnosis Murder' almost every weekday, and 'Neighbours'. I too have become disillusioned with Friday night comedy... To threadrot slightly, I did catch half an hour of Bill Hicks the other night on Paramount. This'll probably get me hung, drawn and quartered, but I didn't like his stuff much. Very androcentric in a way that made it hard for me to connect...

Humm. I watch up to 12 hours of tv a day if I'm at work. This runs from starksy & Hutch, cagney & lacey reruns, the bold and the beautiful and 1 hour a day of Judge Judy uggh.

At home, monday is enterprise, Seem sto be damn good Trek. I like the retro and the genaral nastiness of it all.
Tuesday is no tv night.
Wed is stargate. I just really like it it keeps the plot moving it's one of the few shows that has proper charactor development. And Richard Dean Anderson is really cool in it. (well I like it) and Thursday is angel and buffy. I don't think I have to explane myself here I started a buffy thread if anyone really cares.
Otherwise it's films or the simpsons/futurama.

I am a geek.
I am comfortable with myself.

I guess the coordinate question is "What TV *don't* you watch.

I very rarely watch films on TV, because of film Four syndrome - it's very rare that the desire to sit in front of a TV for more than 45 minutes and something worth doing so for coincide.

I don't watch the news, generally - I get my info from papers, the Interwebnet and radio> Which has the odd consequence that although I know what our leaders look like and soun like, I very rarely see them move. Like lorises.

What're you all moaning aboutthe Winter Olympics for? Curling is probably the greatest spectator sport in the world!

Drama, tension, little people with brooms and other little people trying to make their stone bend by shouting at it and chasing it along.

Try it. Its addictive. I think its on again tonight.

A BREAKDOWN OF MY CURRENT VIEWING HABITS:

1.I deliberately watch on a regular basis:

Black Books
Father Ted repeats
Buffy
Simpsons

..because they are funny and entertaining and generally good.

2.Last night I watched:

a really crap 'documentary' about Rasputin

..because it was about Rasputin. Next week they're doing Crowley, so I'll probably watch that, even though it'll be a travesty.

3.Late Night TV I always end up watching, even though I don't actually like it much:

House of Rock
Thumb Bandits (I don't understand a word of it, but it exerts a strange fascination)
Various bad horror movies
An unholy amount of MTV2 over at a friend's house

I also have on (brace yourselves) Kerrang! TV more than probably anything else. And I still complain about Marilyn Manson's cover of 'Tainted Love' *every time* it comes on...
And doesn't the singer dude from Rammstein look just like a heavier set Iggy Pop?

I am threadrotting terribly today. I apologise...

Sax
13:08 / 13.02.02
This thread has made me realise how little TV I actually watch these days.

Not having digital, cable or satellite, I'm confined to four channels (despite living on top of a big fucking hill I can't get C5).

I generally watch EastEnders if it's on, usually Buffy, footy scores on Saturday afternoon, any England games and most cup ties if they make it on to terrestrial telly, sometimes those Crime Doubles on Monday and Tuesdays (those ones with Nick Berry were bizarrely good), Mr Hell on Sundays, SM:TV on Saturday mornings, although it's crap now Ant and Dec have gone. Absolutely nothing on Friday or Saturday evenings, although I do make it my business to be nowhere near a TV and somewhere near a bar. And that's about it, really. My missus watches more than me, but if she's watching something I don't want to watch I'll either listen to music, read, visit Barbelith, or possibly masturbate. Or all four.

Ethan Hawke
13:09 / 13.02.02
Watching TV, for me, is almost always an activity to be combined with other activities, ie, reading, talking on the phone, or reading stuff on the Internet (I refuse to use the word "surfing"). I don't feel like I miss out on much that's going on on TV when I'm doing something else while I'm watching it. There are hardly any programs that could sustain my interest through commercial breaks.

That being said, I used to watch the simpsons religiously, but now I can't be bothered. If I'm home on Tuesday nights (for some reason I always have something to do on Tuesday) I'll watch That 70s show and Undeclared, both I believe are ensemble comedies with a lot of sharp, original characters (if you ignore all that icky 70s fake-nostalgia on that show). I'll sometimes watch VH1's Behind the Music, but they've run out of good people to do (Creed? Come on!) and there's only so many times you can listen to Nikki Sixx talk about OD'ing. For awhile after sept 11th I watched CNN like it was my job but for some reason now every time I switch it on, Larry King is there, and him I cannot abide by.

Starting at the end of this month, until the end of March I will begin to watch the best Sport on TV, NCAA Men's College Basketball (March Madness), but that's about the extent of my sport's watching. To me, March Madness is the epitome of Sport, as all the players are amatuer, playing for their one chance at glory (and $$$$$ NBA contracts). It's far superior to the NBA because it's much more a team game in college, and there's a sense of urgency that professionals lack.

Cooking shows are a favorite of mine, as I've in the past few months developed an interest in cooking, and I like to see new techniques, etc. They're incredibly calming as well. But not that fluffy little bitch Emeril. He's always cooking something fatty and gross. The best kind of cooking shows are those on PBS, that are in French or German with subtitles underneath. Usually, these guys are making pastries of some sort, which I'm not interested in cooking/eating, but it's still fun to watch.

Oh, and at the gym I watch/listen to MTV2, which plays the same videos every day, just like MTV, except instead of Britney you get "Nickleback", whatever that is. Hardly an improvement on the regular MTV format, and just recently exposed me (I must seek treatment ASAP) to the Worst Song Ever Recorded, Andrew WK's "Party Hard." If this becomes a hit over here, you folks in the UK have a lot to answer for.

When I'm not sitting in the darkness of my room, willing The Secret Life Of Us to return, I usually make an effort to catch The Office, if only because it's scarily true-to-life. Of course, I probably end up watching the two shows beforehand, too.

I try to watch Newsnight Review on Friday nights because Germaine Greer has the same way of speaking/collection of mannerisms as my mother, which is very odd, but it's also great yell-at-the-TV fare. Especially when Bonnie Grier (?) is on: there's a fair amount of sticking fingers in ears and chanting "nospoilersnospoilers" whenever she talks about films: she can't criticise without revealing the end of something.

Other than that? Hmm. I'm pretty easy; if I miss something, I miss something. I'm more likely to make an effort for bad movies or something...

True. Site here. I watched it too. But they had Coil music that was pretty rockin', so I was happy. That and the fact that the guy who was playing Rasputin looked like Richard D James, so that whenever he walked across the screen in that blurry way, I'd be sitting there chanting the words to "Come To Daddy"...

heck no, we're just gonna say 'powerful mysterious carnal redemption devil fighting' a few more times..

It's so rare that I have a choice in the matter – either it's whatever Perry the bartender wants to watch or whatever Mom wants to watch. Perry likes game shows, Mom likes Friends. (As I mentioned in "no cable/TV", I have neither and usually watch nothing at all.)

On those occasions when I do have say, I go for those really cheap 'n' cheezy cooking shows or travel shows on public televsion (Channels 13 or 21 here in NYC). I don't really have a kitchen (so I don't cook) and traveling is something I have to scrimp and save for, so they serve me well as forms of escapism.

Channel 21 shows the BBC every evening at 7PM, so sometimes I bug Mom to let me watch it. There's also RTE (Irish news show) on Tuesday nights. But Mom hates to watch the news, so now I check the BBC online.

Which is why I watch the News -as my mates would tell you if they knew you, I have refined yelling at the TV into an art and the news is very good to shout at.

I don't really make an effort to watch anything at all: for instance, I really wanted to watch John Ronson's Jonathon King profile the other night, and almost forgot it was on. It was only because I went round to visit an ill friend and he was flicking round on TV that I caught it...

Generally, I'm down the pub, however; but I do enjoy most news programmes, and may be one of the few people who regards Question Time as a sport rather than a discussion programme. The one about a fortnight ago with Dr Tom Shakespeare and the guy who set up the Alpha course was great...

I'll watch just about anything so I go out of my way not to.

The only show I watch regulary is the WWF. I love the mixture of athletics, Hollywood, theatre, lowbrow, tongue in cheek humor, the stupid auidence, color and social commentary all rolled up - into one sweaty soap opera that makes up it's own contradicting rules as it goes along.

Some of the matches are absolutely breathaking, the infamous Hell in a Cell (Mankind, Undertaker) I Quit (Rock, Mankind), TLC (Dudleys, Hardyz, Edge and Christian) to name a few.

Vince and Shane McMahon have quite a presence and shit... I can't believe some of the stuff Vince says to the auidence when he's heel. Very political. The WWF constantly takes shots at other networks, conservitive religious/activist groups, sports, Hollywood and Media institutions all while keeping a healthy sence of absurd humor.

When I can I watch Trading Spaces. This show is very creative, top notch.

I'll watch Simpsons and Seinfeld if I'm in a veg out mood.

If I was still unemployed I'd probably be watching Batman Beyond and Pokemon.

I believe that they are both aliases of immortal DC comics supervillain Vandal Savage, but i could be wrong.

I don't have cable, and most of the good shows in the world don't seem to make it to free-to-air tv in Australia, or if they do )Powerpuff Girls, Batman cartoons), they're on at 5.30 saturday morning, or something.

I watch the Simpsons, whatever interesting documentaries happen to be on, Charmed and Dawson's Creek (the wife likes 'em. it's all her doing. honest!), South Park (although usually i wonder why i bother), and Letterman if i'm up that late (it's on at about 1.00am here) and can be bothered switching the tv on.

I'm looking forward to Smallville, and i will probably watch it no matter how crap it is. I like Superman.

I have never watched an episode of Buffy, and I will be deep in the cold, cold ground before i ever do. it's bad enough watching that barbie-doll looking chick on those make-up ads, i couldn't sit through a whole hour of her without vomiting blood.

TV? Oh, you mean the viewscreen for my DVD player and playstation. Yea, I've discovered that if you turn all the toys off, it'll generate its own input. Very strange. Once a week, Buffy appears there, and the tribe gathers to celebrate. But we are quick and dilligent about turning it back off before monsters like Felicity or Dawson attempt to crawl out to trouble us. Yay Buffy! She keeps the bad shows away.

Like Sax, I'm surprised to find I actually don't watch that much television at all; certainly not compared to the time I spend on the Internet. Not much 'must see' TV these days, but here it is:

'The Office' - even better the second time around.

'Footballers' Wives' - the new 'Dynasty', but better plotted and acted, with a more zeitgeisty setting and characters. Hope they commission a second series...

'Clocking Off' - came to this late and really, really like the structure (each programme focusses on an individual within the factory structure but their narrative interweaves with and interrupts subsequent stories). Class.

'So Graham Norton' - format's getting a little tired now, but usually an interesting selection of guests, and I actually find the "shiny Irish poof" himself fairly likeable.

And that's about it, really. Past 'must see' has included the likes of 'This Life', 'Queer As Folf', 'Bob & Rose', 'The Sopranos', 'Cold Feet', 'Ultraviolet', 'Brass Eye', Louis Theroux and Jon Ronson's documentary/interview stuff. And of course 'Big Brother' and 'Pop Idol'...

I don't have cable and am usually not home after about 7 pm, so I usually watch reruns or The Simpsons, Seinfield, Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond and when I get home at night I usually watch Conan O'brien and after that reruns of Married...With Children. When I am home to see non-reruns, I will watch That 70's Show, Ed, Simpsons, Drew Carey Show, Who's Line is it Anyway, and Undeclared. When I go over to my brother's house, he has digitial cable, I spend an obscene amount of time watching MTV-X which we refer to as the black jeans network; I've seen every G'n'R video ever made on there, they also play Slayer, Pantera, Poison, Ratt, Motley Crue, Skid Row, Metallica, Megadeath, and a lot of crap ass nu metal.

hmm. interesting. know for definite that I watch a lot more tv now i don't have home net access.

If I'm feeling low, tendency to get sucked in by afternoon telly is terrifying... I *am* that housewife on valium... Was also hooked on Diagnosis Murder for a while!

(off topic, but Chol-how sad is it that even when your dad's a moderately famous actor, the only way you can get a gig is for him to write an entire tv show? and that your range is so limited that he has to write you a part as his son? )

Ready Steady Cook for example isn't something I'd stick the telly on for, but I will watch it if it's on. Yeah, gwan, laugh. Cookery progs in general are things I'll find while flicking about and end up watching.

Hmm, stuff I watch regularly/'make a date with'(and i generally forget to watch most of these, these are the things i try to remember to watch, more accurately):

Eastenders, when I remember, usually catch the Sunday omnibus, this is probably my most 'habbit'ish telly, fits in with getting up late and lazying about perfectly... even better with mates.
The Office, absolutely even better for knowing what's coming. The best TV in ages.
Match of the Day/football focus/the premiership, if i'm in/awake.
Clocking Off - am just getting really into this.
Black Books.
Will if I find it watch any telly relating to visual art/pop music, even knowing its going to be dreadful. (apart from the bloody south bank show)
Getting quite into the Anthony Worrall-Thompson cookery prog.

recent 'must sees' - The Royal Family, Sopranos, Bob and Rose, Human Remains , the Monty Don organic cookery thing-name escapes me.

There's a qu., is telly watching soemthing you generally do alone/accompanied?
Are there things that are better to watch alone/with people?

Buffy's been mentioned here, i'd also chuck Eastenders in as a thing that's much better to watch with people.

I have my tv tuned to Sky Digital's kistch Easy Listening channel for most of the time I'm in, providing the ultimate background music. I'm probably the only person in the world who listens to this channel more than 2 hours a day.

Very little at the moment...Same as everyone else my main draw to the box recently has been the Office...Which i also tape and once or twice watch again 1/2 hr later...

Apart from that i'll watch Simpsons, Father Ted, Big Train (not as good as the 1st series) and Smack the Pony (best series yet) if i'm about when they're on...

Currently working through the Buffy box sets at the moment (took me a while to jump on the Buffy boat)

Also try and catch 'The Headlines' at least once a day which is a habit i must've picked up from my Mother if memories of being a kid and wanting to turn over to Monkey or Doctor Who or something but only being allowed to when she's 'Caught the Headlines'...in her Big Mummys News Net i imagine...

(re: the Rasputin doc which i missed but i was talking to Television Nasty in the pub the other night and apparently the makers of the program rang him up and asked him if he'd like to contribute to the show because they'd been told he was a leading authority on Rasputin...Which was news to him!!)
