Gotcha Oscar Nominations right here...

Regrettable Juvenilia
12:04 / 12.02.02
Full details here.

The big six:

quote:Best Picture:
A BEAUTIFUL MIND
GOSFORD PARK
IN THE BEDROOM
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
MOULIN ROUGE

No Mulholland Drive? Bah. Still, makes my choice of what to root for a lot easier: Hobbit action all the way...

quote:Best Director:
Ron Howard - A BEAUTIFUL MIND
Ridley Scott - BLACK HAWK DOWN
Robert Altman - GOSFORD PARK
Peter Jackson - THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
David Lynch - MULHOLLAND DRIVE

So if we're hoping LOTR gets Best Picture, then obviously Lynch needs to get this. Actually, I think I'd want him to anyway. If they give it to Ridley Scott I shall break things.

quote:Best Actor:
Russell Crowe - A BEAUTIFUL MIND
Sean Penn - I AM SAM
Will Smith - ALI
Denzel Washington - TRAINING DAY
Tom Wilkinson - IN THE BEDROOM

Not seen any of these (what the fuck is 'I Am Sam'?), but I'm rooting for Denzel, since a) he's cool as fuck, b) Training Day looks great and has that excellent Pharoah Monche tune on the soundtrack, c) as any fool know, Denzel got robbed for Malcolm X back when...

quote:Best Actress:
Halle Berry - MONSTERS' BALL
Judi Dench - IRIS
Nicole Kidman - MOULIN ROUGE
Sissy Spacek - IN THE BEDROOM
Renée Zellweger - BRIDGET JONES' DIARY

Hmmmm. Hard to get excited about any of these, really. I think it's an absolute travesty that Naomi Watts (Betty/Diane in MD) isn't in there. I like Zellweger, but really don't want to see Bridget Jones win an Oscar...

quote:Best Supporting Actress:
Jennifer Connelly - A BEAUTIFUL MIND
Helen Mirren - GOSFORD PARK
Maggie Smith - GOSFORD PARK
Marisa Tomei - IN THE BEDROOM
Kate Winslet - IRIS

No idea what A Beautiful Mind is like, but for Jennifer Connelly to win an Oscar would be a testament to the power of the human spirit.

quote:Best Supporting Actor:
Jim Broadbent - IRIS
Ethan Hawke - TRAINING DAY
Ben Kingsley - SEXY BEAST
Ian McKellen - THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
Jon Voight - ALI

McKellen, all the way. Go Gandalf!

Other things to mention: Ghost World is up for Best Adapted Screenplay, which would be lovely but it's up against LOTR in that, so doesn't stand much chance... LOTR is up for a total of 13 Oscars, and it would be nice if it won lots of them, although I'd quite like The Man Who Wasn't There to get Best Cinematography... Memento is up for Best Original Screenplay - weird since it's based on a short story, but since it's an unpublished one I guess that makes sense.

Anyone see Stato on Film 2002 last night, maybe its time to start the Barbelith betting pool.. got a bad feeling though that Lord of the Rings will get most of the little gold men...

The same thing I was wondering when I was downloading music this morning. not much help, but it does have Nick Cave on the soundtrack. Doing "Let It Be", no less.

It's an interesting selection, I thought. Good to see Lynch get the nod for directing - though I think there'll be a lot of competition from the Altman camp: he's the critical favourite, moreso than Lynch, I think - at least according to a recent critics' awards ceremony, a link for which I don't have to hand at the moment.

My pet picks? Amélie is up for cinematography, which I'd like to see it get, as well as best foreign film. Go go go! The cinematography gong seems to be fairly even, but I think that Black Hawk Down might well edge in there somehow. Which annoys me. While I liked The Man Who Wasn't There, I reckon it seemed to say "homage" too much, rather than create a real look of its own - that could be really deleterious to its chances of scoring the award.

Then again, given the peccadilloes of the academy, it could well be the sort of thing that'll make it a sure thing. Hmm.

I Am Sam is about a retarded guy (Sean Penn) whose 7 yr old daughter is about to surpass him in mental and emotional development & Michelle Pfeiffer as an atty who is helping him fight to keep custody.

I do love Sean Penn as an actor, but the trailers do not inspire.

Why didn't The Man Who Wasn't There get lots more nominations?

Oh yes, because the oscars are a bunch of arse, sorry forgot that for a minute..

Ghost World shut out. Go figure.

And don't hold your breath for Lynch to win best director. I remember when Egoyan was up for best director without having a best film to back him up. Such a feat just does not happen.

Gosford Park? Overrated, although Richard E. Grant was brilliant. Hard to believe it received all those nominations.

Both Washington and Hawke get nods for 'Training Day'? Were their performances all that great? They seem like odd selections.

Matthew Fluxington

I actually saw all of the films nominated for best picture, and christ, what a sorry state of affairs - Gosford Park is the best film there, but it's really nothing special. Were I voting, I'd give it to Moulin Rouge, not so much because it's very good but because it's so incredibly original and weird.

A Beautiful Mind was absolutely horrid, In The Bedroom was dull and average, Lord Of The Rings was terrible.

The Ghost World shut-out is truly pathetic, but not at all surprising.

Wowza. This is the first year I can remember when I haven't seen any of the films nominated for best picture. 'Ghostworld' getting nominated for best adapted screenplay was something of a surprise, figured it would get blanked entirely. We should start our own awards show...

It's not based on the story in the strictest sense, since both were being written at the same time (the story was finished around the sametime the movie was complete). Also, I beleave that Nolan, in the interview on the DVD says that the story was published, in Esquire, or some such magazine.

It could be argued that it's a multi-media project, involving the written word, film, and web.

Oscars may be utter shit for assholes, but I'm glad to see el oh tee ar up there kicking some shit! As for no nomination for Watts, it's a fucking travesty.

Aren´t they going to be political (like last year, it was so PC the starch was going kevlar) and only give Oscars for LOTR after episode three?

This year's show will feature more gratuitous patriotic fanfare, I'm guessing. Look for 'A Beautiful Mind' (the 'safe' American film) to win best picture, Ron Howard to win best director (or maybe Ridley Scott, as his flick is about US soldiers). Not to take anything away from these films/people, but there is better stuff out there. But what more could you expect? It's is a mainstream awards show.

Am I reading this right. Is Amelie not up for anything?

Best film I've seen in years.

The Return Of Rothkoid
09:13 / 13.02.02
You could follow the link and read the nominations. Amelie is up for a number of awards, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Foreign Film, Best Sound, Best Cinematograpy and Best Art Direction, some of which I mentioned earlier. Flyboy only quoted a selection of the big ones.

There's another list here that looks prettier.

The Man Who Wasn't There and The Royal Tennenbaums only nominated for one each? God, I hate the Oscars. Having not seen Amelie yet and kicking myself for it, I'll have to root for the Coens for Cinematography. If only for the Tony Shaloub's scene explaining Heisenberg's uncertainty pronciple, sliding in and out of reality between the shadow bars.
I can't say Tennenbaums should win Best Screenplay only because I haven't seen any of the other movies nominated but have heard great things about Amelie and Memento.

And in a crossover from the "Signs a movie will suck" thread I give you movies nominated for "Achievement in sound editing"

Sorry Rothkoid what I was trying to say, but failing badly, was that I was suprised Amelie wasn't up for best picture and Audrey Tautou wasn't up for best actress or are foreign films excluded from the main awards?

In my defense I'd just finished a stock take at work last night and was a teensy bit whacked.....Ok I'll admit it my diction is rubbish. Sooooooo!

Warrington: not sure about the exclusion. Roberto Begnini got the main award for his role in Life Is Beautiful, didn't he?

No exclusion, but being the Oscars and all, furriners don't make it into the main categories that much. Begnini is the only one I know to get so many nominations from a foreign film....
