Fuck Me.

Saw my first (and my subsequent seven) episodes of Sapphire and Steel last night.

This shit is the bomb.

It rocks so hard.

Nothing happens for 2 hours except character developement! Apocalypse Now can't match that!

And the doctor from "Jam" was in it. Which just made it even more fucked up.

Long and drawn out it was but for us kiddies of the seventies it scared the absolute shit out of us.

Lights chasing people on the floor, deserted railway stations with ghosts of old soldiers, victorian attics. For some reason very scary for us impressionable tots.

ITC released a whole load of them some years ago. All deleted now though!!

Are they really deleted ? I managed to pick up the lot in Virgin Megastore a year or so ago. Well worth the hunt if you have to, mind.

Haus, I'm guessing you saw the 'one with the train station' (as it's known by those of us who watched it as kids) ? One of the better ones, though I think the one with the photographic theme is possibly better. And the final adventure is pretty good, with its suggestion of a 'wider mythology'...

And as people have said, it's a good show (except for the adventure set in the manor house, which wasn’t written by PJ Hammond – reason why, methinks). Great ending to it, too. Not the sort of thing you see on TV that often…

If you redid it now with minimal changes to the script and setup, and a hefty FX budget, I reckon it’d go down rather well…

Sapphire and Steel scared the bejesus out of me when I was a kid. I've got the first four stories on video now, and still can't watch them when I'm on my own.

The soldier on the station prob my favourite, although the people trapped in the photographs is scary shit. And the nursery rhymes/balls of light one.

It was indeed the one at the railway station, swapped by my friend Alice's flatmate for his copy of Earthshock on a loan. God bless ubergeeks.

Regarding whether it could be remade - I think it would require not just a decent special effects budget but also, to be successful, a lot of shortening, which I think would hurt it. The pace is glacial for a modern audience.

the anime series Vampire Princess Miyu has a similar feel. and BTW it does not deal with traditional vampirism. or at least traditional western vampirism. I like it!

anyone have copies in NTSC format? please?

You'll probably find spoilers at:

Another guide.
Sapphire & Steel transcripts.

There's also an essay on it here. I've never seen it, but want to.

I can't believe S&S was 1979! That means I was 11. I have memories of feeling grown up in my fear watching it, after having had to go to bed pretty much after the title sequences of The New Avengers had merged into one of 'ours' being killed...

Sapphire & Steel scared seven shades of sparkling shite out of me when I was small. Try saying that seven times fast...
