Could equally have been placed in the Gathering, this.

Basically, despite being a moderately keen cinema-goer, I've yet to see a film in London - mainly because I haven't found my feet and there's almost too much choice. I don't know quite where to start.

Theatre's a little different. In Edinburgh - even during festival-time - I saw live stuff only occasionally. When I did, I generally enjoyed the experience; I'm not sure why I never really got into the habit.

Anyway, I'm well up for either, particularly during the week. If any London Barbeloids are looking for company on cinema/theatre jaunts, please do get in touch.

Oh yeah, and just so this isn't a total abuse of the thread, how often do people out there visit a) the cinema, and b) the theatre? If not as often as you'd like, how come?

Well...The ICA are starting a 2 week run of Kenneth Anger films which i was going to start a thread about in the gathering...so if you fancy some surreal, occultist, homoerotic hippyness...hows about wednesday???

i love going to the cinema, but rarely do so these days. i don't like multiplex's - there's no soul in those places - and the west end is hideously over-priced, but my local cinemas - the rio in dalston and the holloway odeon are older, the prices more affordable, and the experience is much more enjoyable. i love going to the rio on a weekday afternoon when there's maybe five people in the place. and i would go much more often if i had more money: this is part of the price i've paid for going part time so i can focus on writing. i'm old enough to remember double or sometimes triple bills at the scala in kings cross - admission was £3.50 AND if you were lucky the cat would come and sit near you.

must add a big shout to the most beautiful cinema i've ever been to: the castro in san francisco. don't go to that city without a visit.

oh great! barbemeets that don't involve booze

do you want to see mother clap's molly house 'nesh? i've heard good things about it and i keep thinking of you whenever i go past the theatre on the bus.

and as i said in the other thread, i'm well up for south pacific if anyone else is interested.

though i'm generally disappointed by theatre whenever i go these days, which is why i don't go nearly as often as i could. not even to cheap fringe stuff.

ah, yes, the scala. remember the all-nighters they used to do, with the salty popcorn in little baggies and people asleep in their seats by the final film, and coming out blinking into the early morning and hitting the snooker club because everywhere else was still closed? good times...

i've never smelt urine in the prince charles. except in the loos.

As mentioned elsewhere, I'm all for a Barbeouting to Shockheaded Peter when it opens in April...

As for the movies: it fluctuates. About once a month, maybe?

Ghadis: this week is out, sadly.

'South Pacific' finishes this week. Haven't seen it despite (vaguely) knowing the conductor.

'Mother Clap's' - yeah, quite possibly, although I've heard mixed reviews.

Kenneth Anger - definitely up for that, see what all the fuss was about...

Ooooh!

Did you get Doctor Faustus tix, Kooky? I checked the Young Vic's website and they said it was sold out, and weren't going to know if there were any more seats available until the run opens. Arsebiscuits.

Although, I did espy a poster on the tube for MAGGIE SMITH in Lady Windemere's Fan - THAT, I would like to see. Oho yes.

And yeah, I've got a bit of a hankering to see Iolanthe and Yeoman Of The Guard at the D'Oyly-Carte, if anyone's up for it. And can put up with me grinning maniacally while reciting the lyrics to The Lord Chancellor's Song under my breath...

...somewhere between a large bathing-machine and a very small second-class carriage...

I mentioned Shockheaded Peter earlier: am still up for it, though a little miffed that The Tiger Lillies aren't doing the music any more. Bah.

As far as I'm concerned going to the cinema is a solitary experience.

In fact the only thing wrong with modern film-going is the presence of other people.

A control freak has spoken!

Well you're still wrong :-) Going with mates to the cinema is half thee fun and if all else fails you have someone else to heckle with.

Yeah well up for this idea, cinema mainly but I could be talked around to theatre...possibly. Middle of the week is also cool, in fact easier than the weekends.

So what's on at the independent cinemas at the mo?
Prince Charles says Magnolia's on at 8pm on the 4th of March, heard its good and never seen it, any other ideas?

You need to go and see Humble Boy. It's wonderful; I saw the Diana Rigg version but I can't see how Felicity Kendal can be worse. It's great. Light and frothy, but witty, beautiful set design, some great performances (Simon Russell Beale fantastic as ever). And it wins awards. I loved it, anyhow.

Shockheaded Peter sounds like a VERY good idea.
