Monster Movies

Just saw a really fun werewolf movie- my sweetie works at a video store, so I got to see the screener. It was called Ginger Snaps, and it was just plain spiffy. A pinch of Harold and Maude with a pinch of Heathers but a werewolf movie. A few days earlier I saw Tremors III, which was much, much funnier than I was expecting. And then there was that re-dub of Night of the Living Dead that nearly choked me on my own laughter.

So now I'm on a big old monster movie kick, I'll take the good, the bad, the ugly, but preferably the at least slightly funny, but I know if there's a place on this earth to look for recomendations, it's here. Thanks in advance.

Check out the reviews at www.supernaturalcrime.com . (Friend's site)

He knows ALL the monster movies.

I was just thinking of Creature From the Black Lagoon last night. Lovely film.

Oh, and this isn't REALLY a monster movie, but see Spider Baby! Lon Chaney Jr.'s last role, as the "sane" chauffeur in a house cursed by congenital madness and cannibalism.

Kooky can vouch for this one. Delightful. Unique balance of camp and self-awareness. It's as if an Italian zombie movie was remade by the producers of Green Acres or the Beverly Hillbillies. Lovely, lovely film.

Spider Baby reviewed.

Mmm.

I'm also partial to both versions of the Blob.

Ladies and gents, any discussion about monster movies would be sorely amiss if it were to disclude.....

GAMERA!! Defender of the Universe & Friend of Children Everywhere. Come on, all together now: "Gamera is really neat/ Gamera is turtle meat/We all love you, Ga-mer-aaaah!!!"

Oh yeah?

Let's see you top that.

The Blob? The original does it for me far more than the remake. Purely because of the Burt Bacharach theme song.

It creeps / And leaps / And glides / And slides across the floor...

Tsutomu Kitagawa, the latest Man-in-Suit.

What a coincidence. I've recently started learning web design from my roomie, and the subject I've decided to cover for my first outing is monster movies. Once it's done, I'll throw it on here, just because I love all you closet G-Fans.

On the topic of creature features, if you're not picky, there's so much out there. I'd say one of the great overlooked treasures is Alligator. Great John Sayles script, lots of terrific set pieces, and the performance that prompted Tarantino to include Forster in Jackie Brown.

Also, give Leprechaun a try. It defies the adage that every sequel is inferior than the previous entries. #4 is Leprechaun in Space, and it contains a script that originally had nothing to do with leprechauns, a mad doctor named Mittenhands, and arguably the most surreal breast baring scene of all time. This one had us hitting the rewind button twelve times just to figure it out.

Of related interest: These guys here recreate Japanese costume monster battles in little model Tokyos on levels never conceived.

One of my favorites: Gargoyles.

Scared the pants off me as a kid. The sounds the creatures made....
