Anyone See "Hedwig" Yet?

This and "Ghost World" are my two most anticipated films of the summer - unfortunately I'm too busy to see either of them this weekend. I'm a sucker for the rock opera genre, however.

Anyone see it yet? Care to critique?

Haven't seen it yet, and when I actually do get around to doing so, I'll let you know.

<realizing this was a completely pointless post and regretting it>

Hedwig has just opened in the UK, and I went to see it this evening with Katy of Kitsch Bitch infamy.

I have to say that it blew me away. I was completely stunned by it. The last third gets a bit dark and abstract and I'd like to watch it a few more times to really get to grips with some of the stuff that's going on, but as a film experience I thought it was stunning. Amazing.

There's a lot in there about the nature of drag, gender performance, transexuality, love etc. but there are also some great songs and some tremendous bits of animation and commentary and some really really good JOKES as well. It warrants considerable further discussion, and I would LOVE it if someone would be prepared to write a short-notice zine article about it by the end of the week. That would rock. A lot.

Cherry bomb-
I have seen both and I thought both were very good.

I'd like to say something charmingly clever about Hedwig, but to be honest the minute I heard the "Origins of Love," I was hooked. Anyone who can manage to make Plato not only palatable, but interesting and singable.... Well, who am I to complain?

I also thought that the identity issues were very nicely woven into the story. There wasn't an awkward "Oh, he's reaching for an academic theory point here" moment, but the theory was there; it fit in the context. The film did a good job of confront them without false resolution.

I just saw so Ghostworld, so I'm still sorting out what I really thought of the movie on an intellectual level, but I can say that I enjoyed watching it. I'm having a bit of trouble sorting out Enid's character and I suppose the only complain I have so far is that I definitely felt that hers was the most developed character in the movie. The others were interesting and well acted, but just not fully flushed out. However, this could also be a function of perspective since most of the film is from Enid's point of view.

And now I'll stop babbling with little to no point, aside from you should go see the movies.

I had totally no prior expectations of Hedwig as I got dragged to see it by my flatmate- but yes, I thought it was pretty amazing too. After Velvet Goldmine, as Kookster says, I was bracing myself for a load of old arse, but this just had loads of great tunes (punk/power pop, acoustic-y stuff- Bob Mould provides one of the voices for the Tommy Gnosis(?) character, I noticed) and is also really funny and subtle.
I didn’t understand lots of it, I’m sure- it seems to cover a lot of ground. One of those films that seems to be about loads of different things -
A Moviewatch 9 for this old soldier
