Best Gay Films

Right - this is for a friend of mine, who I want to introduce to gay films (he's just come out) and want to see what people thought the best ones produced were. I don't want to present my opinions until you've had your say. Purely because I want to see if you'd independantly have come up with the ones I thought about suggesting to him.

Politically incorrect in the extreme, but pretty much the only 'gay film' I really enjoyed was 'Cruising'. Oh yeah, and 'Beautiful Thing' was alright as a piece of happy wish-fulfilment.

Okay, I'm probably not the best person to volunteer a sugestion, being straight, but I really liked the movie 'Better Than Chocolate.' I missed the first fifteen minutes or so, but I liked what I saw.

Beautiful Thing was good but I loved NERVOUS ENERGY. I've only seen it twice and both times it was shown on Channel 4 (i believe)
Older guy meets younger guy.
Gay-relationship hijinks ensue.

Very, very good.

(And of course, To Wong Fu and Priscilla are a must.)

Show him 'My Beautiful Launderette' only if you want to do a 'see how far we've come' thing.

if he likes 'arthouse' type stuff -
on the Gay Classics collection - Looking for Langston and Un Chant d'Amour
and Derek Jarman's Edward II

Anything early by Pedro Almodovar (Law of Desire might be a bit... intense, but still).
Almost anything by John Waters. Gay? Well, not exACTly... and it will definitely require a bit of introduction, like.

Top Gun.

oh well, in that case, Spartacus.

In a similar vein to 'Top Gun', 'Mad Max'.

Actually, if he's just come out, don't show him 'Cruising'; it'll scare the shit out of him.

Top Gun.

Batman & Robin. The show "Queer As Folk" seems to be getting some good press & they even had a festival down in Chi-town this summer. I liked "Philadelphia" & "Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss". I dunno. "Torch Song Trilogy"? "Longtime Companion"? Kids In The Hall "Brain Candy"? Kiss of the Spider Woman"? "Fried Green Tomatoes"? That's all I can think of now....

'strawberry and chocolate' - cool, cuban, but kinda patchily depressing...
and i still like 'priest'...
oh - 'the living end' - depressing again...
i did like 'cruising' - didn't think it was anything to get up in arms about - more along the lines of listening to those insistent possibilities (james baldwin) than at all anti-gay...
personally, i like 'the birdcage', and, as robin williams pisses me off, that is a small miracle.

oh...'my own private idaho'

i liked 'high art' and i very much second 'my own private idaho'

"Show me love" AKA Fucking Åmål. Even though they're kids (and girls).

And yes, Almodovar.

Scrubb is on a downward spiral

Though maybe more suited to teenagers who are coming out, both "...But I'm A Cheerleader!" and "All Over Me" are flawed but sweet.

Also "The Broken Hearts Club". I've read mixed reviews of it but I personally loved it - a big cheesy Saturday matinee romance where no-one got HIV, gay-bashed or had a straight female best friend. And I don't think that anyone could argue about Timothy Olyphant...

How's the list shaping up Tom? I'd assumed you meant gay as in gay men, but since others are posting lesbian stuff...
The Hunger and Nadja are must-sees,
I'd second High Art
oh,and Law of Desire blew me away
and your friend could always try Being John Malkovich (I could let him go for 15mins or so...)

High Art and Beautiful Thing get my votes. And Queer as Folk is a must see for the recently out.

Was the American version of QAF any good?

Ditto for "Prick Up Your Ears". The whole thing with Morocco & the boys was just really, really wrong. Plus his lover ends up killing him. Damn, that movie was fucked.

Floating Point
13:44 / 29.07.01
A provisional list of movies that contain generally less apparent acts of faggotry-

Gattaca-a drunken Jude Law and testy Ethan Hawk arguing at home like a couple of old queens. Extemely refined taste in clothing and interior decoration.

Interview With the Vampire-
Brad Pitt+Tom Cruise+lots of necking

Fight Club

They LIve-Significant homo-erotic undertones and the longest fight scene in movie history.
Note: most of John Carpenter's films are a bit dodgy.

Talented Mr Ripley

Gridlock'd

Any cop-buddy movie

Now, if he's as good looking as you are sweetie-pie then I have my very own private gay movie I'd be happy to hand over.

Tom: have you 'introduced' him yet? Is he irreparably traumatised?
