My local comic shop is shite, bless 'em. They get sporadic deliveries, never any good stuff, and only venture into indies/small press comics if they've got a bad girl with unfeasible breasts on the front.

Yesterday I got NXM 124, although they never got 123 in, Ministry of Space 2 (it wasn't new, it had been kicking around for six months) and Muties 1.

I've been picking stuff like Muties up out of sheer boredom - examples of one issue wonders I've bought recently include stuff like Blade, which was just shit.

I want to know what there is out there of quality - I bought Comics International but don't recognise any of the titles any more. I don't mind superheroes, but I'm looking for other stuff as well. I've heard Oni Press mentioned around here, and managed to get an issue of Queen and Country, but I thought it was appalling. My only criterion for comics is that they need to be at least as good as something I'd watch on the TV - which I don't think's unreasonable.

Come on, people, give me a few ideas, because I might be venturing to Forbidden Planet in Leeds over the weekend.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Buy a Hellboy compilation. "Conqueror Worm" just came out, is fantastic, and will make you want to go read all the other ones.

Others I like:
Invisibles
Preacher
Planetary
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Watchmen
V for Vendetta

Hope that helps.

some recommendations:

Chester Brown "I Never Liked You"

Seth "It's A Good Life If You Don't Weaken"

Dash Shaw "Love Eats Brains"

David Rees "My New Filing Technique Is Unstoppable"

the new softcover version of Daniel Clowes' "Caricature" (or the new issue of Eightball)

Adrian Tomine, Optic Nerve issues 5, 6, 7, or 8

Libertine Idler: Cheers, although I have read all of those. I was thinking more of new stuff. But thanks anyway.

Flux: They all sound mighty interesting. What number is the new Eightball, by the way, and when did it come out? How frequent is it these days?

x-force, if you're not reading that already.

if you're in the mood for looking for backissues, check out peter milligan's 'shade the changing man', allan moore's/neil gaiman's 'miracleman', mike allred's 'madman' and 'atomics'.

Is Peter David's 'Captain Marvel' any good? I've heard that it is.

The new issue of Eightball is #22. It's got a full color issue with a bright cover with a number of characters walking around in a small town setting. I seriously think this issue is the best comic Clowes has produced thus far, which is insanely high praise coming from me. It's cheaper than most of the other comics I've recommended too... It's about the price of a nice magazine or a mass market paperback book, it's $6 over here...

Eightball pretty much comes out whenever Clowes is ready to put one out, I guess... it averages two issues a year, but there was only one in 2001. But that's okay - we got the Ghost World movie/screenplay book, that's fine by me.

I wonder how much of what I recommended will be available where you are - the Dash Shaw and David Rees stuff I'm not so sure about, cos they self-published and probably have bad circulation. However, both items are popular in the NYC Forbidden Planet, so maybe yr Forbidden Planet will have them too. The Dash Shaw comics are mini-comics, very cheap. The first two issues will cost you a combined $3 US.

The rest are all Drawn & Quarterly and Fantagraphics catalog titles, which should be in stock depending on demand...

From whom, Peter David himself?

Have you been following that ridiculous Peter David Vs. Joe Quesada debate on Comicon? Yikes! David is the king of the clueless fatbeards, for real...

Liberty Meadows.
Blue Monday.
Definitely the new Eightball.
7 Guys of Justice is a laugh.
What did you think of "Muties"? I actually quite liked it. Not enough to collect it, but it was interesting.

Also recommend Gloomcookie. The first trade is excellent.

Add this to your cart as well:

Alan Moore's Swamp Thing collected trades.
Transmetropolitan
The Authority, hell, might as well pick up Stormwatch while you're at it.

And most importantly, heed these words:
No matter what anyone tells you, no matter how enthusiastic they seem, no matter how much they say that Azarello rules , DO NOT and I mean DO NOT pick up any current issues of Hellblazer. Azarello sucks and no one has written an issue worth reading in the last five years.

Sock Monkey. Anything by Paul Pope. Zero Girl trade. X-Force. Anything by Clowes.

That would be my current hit list.

Paul Jenkins has.

From around 87? til 120, a good run in my opinion. Nice Sean Phillips art. Sexy, ambiguously nasty Hellblazer

do people in general not like azarello's constantine? i just read the Hard TImes trade and thought it was incredibly well plotted and gripping.

as far as reccomendations: there was an unbelievably weird and amazing comic called BIOLOGIC SHOW that had issues number 0 & 1, i don't know if he ever did anymore. someone here can fill in the details, but it was by a once well regarded mainstream comic artist who had a total breakdown and came out the other side with this totally unique + disturbing comic.

the artist was, and is, Al Columbia. he was never a mainstream comic artist though. he also has a book out called DOGHEAD. his output is very small. he has done work in anthologies such as ZERO ZERO and BLAB.

I don't think so. I hate his dialog so much, the book lost all the mood built up by the eariler writers. And as for the plots. The one in the prison was ok if a little over grim, but the story line with the town making internet porn was so shit i dropped the book on the spot.

I've been reading it in sporadic chunks, and have been keeping up with it of late. It's fun, but every now and again he gives a one-liner that makes me want to shake him and shout "quit being so damn trite and melodramatic, you ass".

No kidding. This cutting edge "genius" has managed to turn Constantine into a complete asshole for no reason. He's not compelling or edgy, he's just a dick for the sake of it. The dialoge is shit, the scripts have nothing more to offer than cheap shock value and the flow of the stories are as choppy and jerky as a 73 VW Bug with a shitty transmission.
Oh yeah, and fuck Wizard for raving about him. Anyone writing Hellblazer should be locked in a room for a week with the Alan Moore run of Swamp Thing. Then and only then should they be given the keys to the car.

Captain Marvel? Fanboy fodder. You can't understand it unless you've been reading Peter David books for the past 5 years or longer.

I second Gloomcookie, and would recommend Eagle from Viz, a Japanese comic about an American Presidential election. Wonderfully done, with characters who have a lot more depth than it appears at first glance, and a unique understanding of politics. It's odd to see that someone from Japan can do a political novel so much better than people who live under that system.

Lone Wolf and Cub is another book that never fails to entertain.

I also think that Detective Comics has been above average with Greg Rucka doing some very good work when he doesn't have to tie into a big crossover.

Thanks, folks, interesting selections there. I'll let you know when I get to FP next week or so.

Zoom: Muties - only picked the first one up so far. Thought it was nicely done but largely felt: "so what?" Is the book a serial or are they individual stories?

Hellblazer: Bleeurgh. Read the first five years or so of this book religiously but what Azzarello has done to JC makes me want to weep. It's heresy.

At the risk of sounding ever-so Fanboy, I am delving back into my Marvel Essentials, and while they aren't Intelligent, they are entertaining as hell. The Essential Howard The Duck is amazing for it's time, and it shows that the Vertigo style didn't just spring out of nowhere...and The Essential Fantastic Four volume 3 shows that Kirby was amazing in how he could just throw out concepts on a whim.

Under-rated books? Spectre is pretty good if you can swim around in DeMatties's waters (if you don't like his previous stuff, you won't like this), The Detective trade with Greg Rucka stories is quite good as is his Queen and Country. I like Lenore a LOT, and a new issue came out a couple of months ago...

But the BIG book to get is the new Krazy Kat book. Amazing work in it, and I'm shocked at how we have taken the comic strip from a real art form to the marketing driven crap it is now (we need a strip for female animal lovers who have working class jobs...find a strip for them!).

i saw Zero Girl mentioned; does anyone remember or care about The Maxx? Sam Kieth's best work (not like there's much of it anymore...). This was the first non-marvel/DC comic i ever bought, and it remains with me still. How about Matt Wagner's Mage, the first two series are collected and easy to come by. Blade of the Immortal? And remember Spaids, Transmet is written by Warren Ellis, but it's cool.

Err actualy as i'm sure most people here already know but are too polite to point out, Transmetropolitan is written by warren ellis, and not garth ennis.

Anyhoo - another big up for strangehaven and the maxx which my non-comic reading housemate (an increasingly inaccurate title) loves.

Matt Wagner's "Grendel: War Child" is a really nifty post-apocalyptic grail quest kind of thing. Not only do you get a wonderful tale, but glossy pages. mmmmmmm....glossy pages.

Sax: It would probably help if you tell us (who don't know you already that is...) what you generally like and appreciate. I like giving recommendations, but it’s a bit difficult not knowing what you usually read.

But for sheer entertainment, I could recommend Alan Moore’s Top Ten. You have to be a bit into superheroes, but my (admittedly, slightly nerdy) woman friends like it a lot, and most of them just read one or two JLA-adventures when they were kids. So it’s not strictly fatbeard country...

A lot of good ideas, fast paced and witty dialogue, and generally very clever.

Imagine Hill Street Blues, with every character; cops, crooks and the general public, exchanged for superbeings or aliens. The explanation why the city is so weird is a bit far fetched, so I won’t go into that...

Suffice to say that there are super speedster pizza boys and hookers releasing neuro transmitter substances through telepathy. The police captain is a talking dog in a humanoid exoskeleton. That won me over -- I really love stories with talking animals.

A lot of fun. There’s at least one trade paperback.

In another vein: Have you read Stray Bullets by David Lapham? Okay, so it’s a bit of a gangster comic... But this one actually has believable, gripping characters and beautifully fluent story telling. Most of the people described are peripheral to crime politics and most stories have nothing to do with gunslinging at all. It’s still pretty gritty, though.

At least two paperbacks, from what I know. Highly recommended. Then again, it’s won all sorts of prices, so you may have read it already... Not exactly underrated...

Solitary Rose: There is a Essential FF 3? Since when? I have to have it! Strangeness galore!

And yes, Krazy Kat is a must read (or better, own). Get a book or two if you haven’t already!
