Just bought this yesterday. I'm not too far into it, but it's fairly entertaining thus far. There's a lot of stuff that I'm fairly surprised that Steve Gerber got away w/at Marvel during the 70's. It's an interesting mix of social commentary and outright goofiness. If you liked Nevada or the current Howard mini, it's worth checking out.

Does it contain a more intelligent level of social commentary than was found in issue one of the new series, ie "boy bands are manufactured by record companies! and appeal to middle-aged gay men! middle-aged gay men are inherently amusing!"?

Dear God Yes Flyboy. The old HTD series was fucking brilliant. Honestly, read it, it's fantastic.

Zoom.

In the context of comics produced by the Marvel Entertainment Group, the social commentary is intelligent. But I'm not sure that that's saying much. It's still entertaining, if not earth-shattering.

Arthur, have you read all/most of the series? because though that describes most of the series some individual issues and sequences go far beyond the "good when compared to its surrounds" faint praise.

like the Howard hallucinates issue, space turnip issue, Howard the [censored so as not to give away spoiler] issue, the scene where Howard shares his consciousness with all these people across the world.
