I hope it's not too obnoxious to whore out my forthcoming book here. Anarchy for the Masses: An Underground Guide to The Invisibles is out in May from Mad Yak Press (www.madyakpress.com). You can see a little blurb on page 364 of Previews, if you're that way inclined.

Some stuff crammed in there for everyone - (yet another set of) annotations for deep readers, running commentary on every issue from the creators involved, and more than 25,000 words of Grant babbling about interference by Vertigo, what really happened in Kathmandu and who's making the forthcoming Invisibles film and why nobody will confuse it with The Matrix.

And for the more anal among us, the dimensions are identical to the Invisibles trade paperbacks (except much thicker at nearly 300 pages), so it doesn't look crap on your shelf.

Um, is this allowed?

did you use the bomb annotations? i've always wished that stuff would be published.

Cover price is $19.95 but I'm guessing most people will get it at a discount by pre-ordering through their local shop.

The annotations were deliberately not based on the Barbelith ones because we didn't feel right about appropriating work other people had done. In the end it's for the best, because the annotations in the book are much denser (ie: there are far more per issue) than the ones on Barbelith. However, if someone decided to supplement the Barbelith annotations with ones from the book I wouldn't particularly object.

So, just out of curiosity, how did you come to write the invisibles companion? Did you make a pitch or were you sought out?

Speaking of The Matrix and annotations...

Had a friend who worked in a movie theater. Told me that this guy would come in every week and watch The Matrix again and take notes.

Finally saw the guy: he was around fifty, close-cropped hair, fat, with callused hands, wearing dirty over-alls. Had to be a farmer. He told us "There's lots of prophecy in that movie!"

Hope the Apocalypse doesn't get here before the sequels do...

wow! maybe the answer to the biggest mystery in the series will be revealed: an explanation as to how grant and his editor could have let the art in "Invisible Kingdom" go to press!

Pitched it to Vertigo a little over a year ago and was completely ignored - not even a form rejection letter. Chose to go the punk route and do it anyway, and to my delight everyone I contacted was eager to be involved, save for one notable omission. Grant thought it was a great idea and invited me over for some talks, and things sort of spiralled out of control from there.

Grant (and a few other people) have some ... colorful things to say about art selection and editing around this time.

Looks cool. I'll try to come up with the money to buy it. (I'm broke and have a baby on the way.)

Speaking of the Matrix. I'm watching Ghost in the Shell right now as I type this and I must say, those Whogiveashitski brothers sure don't try to hide it when they steal someone else's ideas.

Sorry, back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Sorry

wow totally can't wait and all YAY... okay and sch, but am i the only one that thought the art on Invisble Kingdom was swank? i mean it's like the story was speeding up w/ the constant changes in art, and such, i mean yeah the editing shoulda been tighter and the art should FIT (john's hair, KM and fanny in the bum's clothes, harpers face ingerys) but i still dug it... i also think i'm the only one that thicks jill thomson was crap in Vol 1 too i guess (good pacing, bad art)...

Yeah, I get all the speeding up, universe down the plughole bit.... BUT there were some serious fuckups w/ the art. Basically, vital elements in the panel descriptions were completely ignored by some of the artists. Cam Stewart actually posted some of the script up here, so we could get some idea of just how buggered the final ish of 'The Invisible Kingdom' actually was.

Looks nice - is that a new cover, or spliced together from existing art? And if it's the former, who's it by?

To my moderately trained eye, the cover looks like a combination of a Steve Yeowell picture from Book One and that Chris Weston double-page spread of ‘the machine’ from Book Two.
Not knocking that, it looks fine to me.

And a great idea to have the book the same size as the TPBs, Patrick – nice touch. I’ll certainly be picking one up.

New cover, using specially commissioned art by Steve Yeowell (top) and Chris Weston (bottom). Incidentally, the book originally had a ton of all-new images by several of the series' artists, but at some point DC decided that the term "creator owned" is irrelevant and, despite us having Grant's permission, threatened indirectly to sue. Sorry, I don't have the cash to fight AOL Time Warner!

I'll throw some of the finished artwork online somewhere if anyone wants to see it. Lots of new character sketches and splashes.

The book doesn't go into that sort of thing. There's a small amount of "this may mean that" but for the most part unless there's a direct quote from an interview subject we steer clear of trying to be The Final Word. Think of it more as a tool to aid your own discoveries. We didn't want to ruin the fun! But Grant discusses what some characters "represent" if that's your thing.

He builds the "new house", the Technoccult corporation...he owns the weapons/information....he controls the world. Or at least Technoccult does by the time King Mob takes over the reins. And we all know what Mob does with Technoccult, don't we?

This is very interesting, especially in the light that DC has prevented an indie publisher from bringing out a trade of the creator owned title the skreemer in order to broing out its own version.

Looks like we are finally beginning to see the difference between creator owned and creator controlled...

I don't. Unless it involves stuff that's published in the tradebacks, like KM being yelled at by school girls with an IQ of 120.

We don't get the single issues where I live.

So. When's the next volume of collected issues going to be out? They ARE all going to be published, right?

Two questions. Do you know what the release date is, and, Does the possibility of ordering the book directly through you or your publisher exist? I put in an order for it at my shop yesterday, but I honestly don't know if I'll be in town through May.

Release date is the week of 15 May for copies bought through Previews. I think that books bought direct from the publisher (www.madyakpress.com) ship whenever they get back from the printer in late April.

Of course, I urge everyone to order multiple copies under assumed names at all the worst comic shops you know...

Well Mob uses Technoccult to guide the culture of spectacle down more...Invisible avenues. And then, of course, there's the release of the Invisible's game... But it all gets a bit fuzzy and fractal from there on in.

This sounds like it's going to be a top treat. You are the guy that's written here before about this aren't you? We're not about to be submerged under several big books about the Invisibles and stuff? And is it going to get a decent release (Amazon, Borders etc) or is it going to be one of those 'you have to order from the publishers' deals? And finally, is there any chance of a webpage or something to show us the kind of style this book is in?

I'm hesitant to keep answering people's questions because I always hate self-serving propaganda. It's just a book; it might suck. It somehow seems even more crass to do it here, where I've spent ages lurking but rarely post.

However, since I've been getting a lot of questions on this elsewhere:

1) Just the one book. I think the rumors come from All the Rage, which passed off incorrect publishing information. A fun column, but can't he ever issue corrections?

2) Yes, it should be available at all the online bookstores, although it seems to take forever to get listed.

3) I, personally, make a higher royalty on copies bought direct from the publisher, and higher pre-orders at comic shops artificially swells sales as Diamond orders a higher bumper. Not that this concerns anyone but me!

4)You can see the cover at Mad Yak Press on their "current" page. No interiors to display, but the design work there is completely mad - multiple "points of entry" on each page, with all sorts of sidebars and text boxes and funky layout that still somehow manages to come across in a very logical and readable fashion. I'm not sure whether I'm flattered or bothered by this, but Anarchy for the Masses is a great bathroom book...

Well, Patrick, I've just ordered 3 copies for my store. I'm quite looking forward to it.

Question: Who did the cover art?

(Sorry if you've already answered that. I'm notoriously lazy and haven't read the rest of the thread.)

Zoom.
