Bill Sienkiewicz

As people who read my last post will gather, I havnt been collecting comics for a good 10 years.

One of the best series I picked up was the Bill Sienkiewicz/Frank Miller Elektra Assasin
8 part mini. Some of it was a little TOO abstract (especially as I was only 11 at the time!) but that artwork...holy shit that man is SOOOOOOOO talented. I checked out his site, and its really made me want to track done something decent that hes worked on in the past decade.

Can someone make a recommendation? Preferably something thats come out in a nice convenient graphic nov and wont be too hard to get hold of. Has he done any non-Super Hero work in that badass impressionist style of his?

And if anyone knows where to get hold of Bill S posters I would be EXTREMELY grateful.

He did the Daredevil - Love and War fully painted graphic novel with Frank Miller. It's not as experimetning as Elektra, though.

Stray Toasters is from the same period and is a jumble of all sorts of media -he wrote it himself.

SInce then it's been somewhat patchy. There was a Jimmy Hendrix graphic novel, the two issues of Big Numbers, a christmas story ... and he has done a lot of line art and inking.

It should all be reasonably available - at least through eBay.

Early Dave Mckean stuff has a lot of Sienkiewewtcxzx influence - and you can pick up any episode of David Mack's colour Kabuki for more of the same.

Good luck.

Wasn't the second issue of Big Numbers drawn by Al Columbia, the quickly burnt-out Sienkiewicz-come-lately? After his issue of Big Numbers Columbia put out a couple of issues of The Biologic SHow before he disappeared...

Don't forget all those issues of Moon Knight...oh. Wait. Yeah. Forget those.

And the cover to RZA's "Bodby Digital in Stereo". That was about the only thing right with that album.

Ive seen some of his Daredevil work.

Noticed that Stray Toasters at his site won loads of awards. Never came across it before, so Ill definately be on the lookout for that.

I like the sound of Bill S drawing a Hendrix book!

Those other artists and titles sound interesting. Ill look them up. Cheers all!

I can't believe no one has mentioned it yet but his run on New Mutants is an absolute classic. From about #19 to #39 I think. Admittedly it doesn't come in tradeback form but these issues really are worth hunting down.

I think he also did some issues of Power Man & Iron Fist but I'm not sure...

Tempting, but I havnt got the worlds largest comic collection (maybe my streets largest!) but what Ive brought I chose wisely, so theres nothing I have I would really be willing to part with. Unless you happen to be the one Wild Dog fan on the planet, the first mini series of which somehow ended up in there!lol

invix-

Yeah, I collected the Shadows and Light series as well. F**king awsome covers and artwork.
Is that amazon link right? I keep getting a browser error.

yawn-

Anyone that blunt must know what their talking about! Ill keep my eyes open..

the Fool-

Yeah Im sure I heard about something Mutant related that he worked on. Thatll be it, then!

Mr S also did the artwork for marvel comics 3 issue adaptation of David Lynch's film version of DUNE, which is well worth checking out and often available for mere pennies per issue

Bill S is to Marvel in the 80's what, oh, say, Neal Adams or Bernie Wrightson was to DC in the 70's - making shite books readable. Even as a young kid, I read New Mutants only for his art. Same with Moon Knight.

hey model 7.

i wasn't sayin i wanted more comics. i don't collect comics myself - i just have them from years back. a decent vid/DVD or something would be fine. but, you know, i'm feeling a bit arthur daley here and it's not such a big deal. i just thought that if you were desperate, that they're just lying about my house. anyway, if you do want them, just think about something that you wouldn't mind getting rid of.

Try and get Stray Toasters if you can. I only read it once or twice about 7 years ago, but it was pretty neat-o.

I remember meeting him at the local comic shop when I was 8 or so. He autographed my copy of "Marvel Universe" and my brother's "New Mutants"...

He recently did some pretty nice work on the Ultimate Marvel Team-Up. Daredevil and Punisher stuff. Pretty good. At a con last year, Bendis said when they asked him who he wanted to work with on Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Sienkiewicz was the first guy he thought of.

The first 2 issues of Big Numbers were drawn by Sienkiewicz with Columbia as his Art Assistant. Columbia was meant to take over full art duties with issue 4 before he went nuts and cut up all the work he'd done. As well as the 2 issues of Biologic Show he's done a few stories for Zero Zero and Blab all of which are nothing like his original Sienkiewicz-esqe style such as his Doghead. Some of the best comics ever made i reckon...If Fantagraphics ever get round to collecting his stuff it will be the best book EVER!!

Sorry got a bit carried away there...Huge Columbia fan...oh and Stray Toasters is pretty good too...
