Is anyone else here familiar with her work?

I just recently acquired A Child's Life, and I'm pretty amazed, but even moreso disturbed and saddened. The book is mostly about sexual abuse, focusing mainly on the pedophile stepfather of the protagonist Minnie.

The book is very difficult to get through in one sitting, similar in how reading Chris Ware's Jimmy Corrigan can be a very emotionally draining experience. Some of the graphic depictions of sex acts are too depressing are particularly unsettling, as are the anatomical drawings - particularly the cross-section illustrations of young girls performing oral sex on men.

I highly recommend the book, particularly to the 'theory-bitch' segment of the Barbelith audience, and I would be very interested in hearing what others of you think of Gloeckner's work.

Edited to say:

Also, do check out this profile from the New York Times Magazine from this past August (my birthday, to be exact).

I've loved Phoebe Gloeckner's ever sense I first saw her work in Weirdo. I thought that A Child's life was a very moving work and I would rank it as one of the best works in the comics medium up there with Maus, From Hell, or Safe Area Gorazde.

Oh, wow, thanks for posting...I was getting scared that this topic would just go ignored by everyone.

I've got to ask: what is Safe Area Gorazde? I've never heard of it, and I would be interested in finding out more if yr comparing it to Maus and A Child's Life...clearly, you know what is up.

I've never heard of her but I'm checking out the website now. Those cross sections are disturbing. I'll keep an eye out for the book.

Her styles familiar, i'm sure i must come across her in the seven ages of women or some of the twisted sisters stuff...

Safe area Groazda is journalist/cartoonist's account of his time in the former Yuogoslavia. see also his work on Tales from Bosnia: Soba and of course his exxcellent Palestine

acutley that image is from The Atrocity Exhibit which is also by J.G. Balard and about body transgression but is not the same book as crash. Phoebe Gloeckner also did ilustrations for the re serch books angry women vol.1 and 2 and for the re serch book of bodily fluids. I think almost all of these ilustrations are included in her book A child's Life
