Joe Casey leaves Uncanny X-Men!

And going from bad to worse, Chuck Austen is taking over.

I'm probably the only person who has any interest in this particular trainwreck around here, I suspect...

We're finally getting our gay X-Man, former Alpha Flight member Northstar:

quote: "He is a new addition, and yes, we'll be dealing with his sexuality. It won't be a central theme, but he is who he is, and it will have an impact on things ... relationships, attitudes, conflicts.”

...and they are totally dropping the ball! It's bad enough that they will gloss over his sexuality, but it's worse that they chose to include a gay character more notable for being a caricature of a vain swishy asshole than anything else...

In other, faintly disturbing news, Mark Millar is working on a new Youngblood project with Rob Liefeld. Mark has this to say about Rob and his art:

quote: “Because I love his [Liefeld’s] art and I wanted to do something with the Bad Boy of comics...Getting into bed with perhaps the most controversial creator in the medium is something else altogether and I just liked the challenge. "

- on why he took the assignment

“I told Rob I'd make Youngblood the hottest launch of the summer and I wasn't kidding. I'd love to tell you what the high concept is, but I'm just too pleased with it to leak it this early. Let's just say that, when it hit me, I just laughed out loud, phoned Bryan Hitch and Frank Quitely to show off, and then took the rest of the day off.”

That last bit just baffles me - surely Mark is bragging to them about the concept and not that he's working with a vastly inferior artist, right? Or was he going for some kind of irony that an American boy like me just can't begin to fathom?

Definitely marry me.

I love you, special friend.

Flux:

I'm pretty sure he was bragging about the concept. He loves Liefeld's art? What?

I think Millar just likes to strike *controversial* poses sometimes..... Young Cock.

Wait, so Millar is scripting and Liefeld is drawing it? I always thought Liefeld's strength was his writing.

In other news, I see that the novelist Brad Meltzer is taking over the scripting of Green Arrow after Kevin Smith leaves.

Now, I’ve read one of BM’s books (‘The Tenth Justice’), and quite enjoyed it (he name-checks Watchmen early in, which is a sign of healthy comic knowledge), but I do wonder about the fact that a man with an unknown ability to write comics (has he ever written one at all? Please reassure me) has been given such a high-profile assignment.

A nasty cynical part of me thinks it might be in some way influenced by the fact that he’s very good friends with – and indeed I believe he used to share a flat with – Judd Winick, current writer on Green Lantern.

Please, someone, put my mind at rest on this one…

Is 'Green Arrow' all that high profile? Green Arrow's not Batman or anything. That being said, I'm all for non-comicbook writers writing comic books. It can only help the medium, open it up to new readers. Even though I'm not in any major way a Kevin Smith fan, I'm really glad he's been doing comic books.

I'd fucking love to see Jonathan Lethem write a comic, and has anyone seen Michael Chabon's X-men movie script? It's supposedly very good, but I can't find it anywhere.

Also, is that Judd Winnick guy the one who was on 'Real World San Francisco'?

So, does this mean we look foward to a Puck-penned Lobo sometime in the future?

Green Arrow’s been a good seller for DC with Smith writing it, so I kind of equate it with Daredevil over at Marvel – and the character’s in DK2, getting more exposure – so I think it’s moderately high profile at the moment. Judgement call, of course.

I’m fine with non-comic writers doing so, but I just think that BM might not want to be growing up in public, as it were…

And that is indeed the same Judd – his graphic novel ‘Pedro and Me’ is the (to my mind, rightly-acclaimed) story of his friendship with Pedro Zamora from the same TV series.

And as for the whole Northstar thing above, isn’t Chuck Austen gay ? That would, I think, mean we may not necessarily see a tacky stereotype for a character…

DBC

Edit PS - Invix, LOVE the idea that Liefeld's strength might be his writing, but I'd always thought it was really his ability to get people to finance him to start comic series that never get beyond issue four...

good god, if I hadn't already decided that Uncanny had become one of the shittiest comics ever...

Chuck Austin?!? blech!!!

Rob?!? double blech!!!!

I stick by my earlier statement: with the exception of the pure wackiness of X-Force, I refuse to get involved with any X-Men story not written by Morrison or Clairmont.

Well, at the moment, it's DC's biggest seller, except for Dark Knight 2, which doesn't really count...

Seriously? Green Arrow? The kids today are into that? It seems so retro, bows and arrows, Robin Hood/William Tell stuff, etc. Interesting.

I read a little thing about Northstar earlier today that got me thinking. I wonder how much attention, if any, will be given to Northstar's Quebecois separtist political stance. It seems it would be interesting to explore the definiton and protection of a kind of Mutant culture. After all, if the X-Men were supposed to be some sort of stand-in for other groups that are prone attacks by bigots and hatemongers, couldn't a portion of the mutant populace demand cultural independence from the rest of the world like many of their real world counterparts desire?

I suspect Miller was paid a large sum of cash in advance for his work for Liefeld. But I must confess that Liefeld's art is one of my favorite guilty pleasures (for some reason I just like the way it looks). So anyway, I for one am looking forward to this.

Hello everybody. First post and I'm glad to help, invix. You wanted Michael Chabon's X-Men proposal, you gotit. The rest of the site is also worth a look.

Oh, and yes, Judd Winnick from Pedro and me, Barry Ween, Exiles and Green Lantern's fame is THAT Judd Winnick.

Greetings from Spain, where we'll get NXM #122 NEXT week...

Not really news, but...

The sad part about this is that the Onion crew had to know enough geek-fu to successfully write it.

Yeah but if the GL movie stars Nick Cage it will suck no matter who directs it.

On a completely unrelated GL note, what was the name of that big pink guy that had the souls of his entire race of people stored inside his ring?

I love having one stop shopping for comics news.

From Newsrama, if you're too lazy to look yourself. Wildstorm is putting out a HUGE harcover, slipcase edition of Ellis' twelve issue run on the Authority. It's oversized for better widescreen goodness. Not sure if it's already been mentioned, but in other Ellis news, a Planetary/JLA crossover is in the works, with art chores by...Jerry Ordway?!? Also, Garth Ennis is writing a comic about a superpowered hooker. Surprise, surprise. Exciting news for me and maybe two other people. Mike Mignola is doing a funny little story called The Amazing Screw On Head. It looks like Mignola is channeling a little Toth there.

Planetary's Cassaday biding his time until Ellis finishes more scripts. Sorry if you've alredy seen these.

And previews of his Captain America.

And if anyone knows what happened to the Shane Glines site, could you let me know? It was down for awhile, and now it looks like it's been replaced by Saint Lucia Bed and Breakfast.

Word on the street is that we'll see new trades for both the Invisibles and Animal Man this year. Also, Peter Milligan has written a follow-up to his Human Target series. This sequel will be released as an original graphic novel, in hardcover.

1) Is Nightcrawler gay? We *WISH*. Although his relationship with *his stepsister* always seemed pretty dodgy...

2) Liefeld is generally assumed to be stronger as a writer than he is as an artist by those who have only seen his art, and vice versa. This being because there has, they theorise, to be some reason why he is employed.

3) John Cassaday is a) waiting and vain and b) doing Battle of the Planets?

How strange is this world?

Sorry to dig up this old thread, but there isn't enough info on this to merit a new one.

Vertigo is releasing three four-issue mini-series under the umbrella title of Vertigo Pop! Each mini-series will centre on a different city. The first and third series are Tokyo and Bangkok. The second is London, and at first I was a little wary, but...

"The VP! series will continue after Tokyo with Vertigo Pop!: London written by Peter Milligan, with art by Philip Bond."

Ohhhhh, yeah!

The Newsarama story is here.

Let's just hope their output this time around it as good.

The only good thing about the Millar/Liefled thing is that if Rob makes enough money maybe he'll finally release the last two issues of Alan Moore's Supreme, which I've been dying to read for about three years now.

Oh hell yes. I was a breath away from dropping New X-men until now. And a Wolverine/Doop project? Woo-hoo!

Marts confirmed that Ethan Van Sciver and Frank Quitely will remain as two of the artists on New X-Men, and added that Phil Jimenez will be illustrating New X-Men #132. Marts said that Marvel and Jimenez are in talks about him playing a larger role on the art chores of the book. The publishing plan, in terms of numbers of issues per year, of New X-Men is still being discussed, according to Marts.

I guess this is why Jim Mahfood didn't do the art for Oni's "Shot Callerz": Mahfood Joins Image

Fresh off the recent signings of the independent titles Hammer of the Gods by Mike Oeming, Paul Grist’s Jack Staff and Matthew Cashel and Jeremy Haun's Paradigm, Image Comics has confirmed for Newsarama that another indy creator has joined their ranks, this time writer/artist Jim (Clerks, Ultimate Marvel Team-Up #9) Mahfood.

Mahfood’s deal with Image starts this September with the release of the Stupid Comics Vol. 2 one-shot, and then continues later this year with a new Grrl Scouts mini-series.

“I'm happy to say that Image will be the new home for all my ‘40oz’, creator-owned work,” Mahfood told Newsarama. “This includes Grrl Scouts, Stupid Comics, Zombie Kid, and Smoke Dog.”

New X year sounds good:

Grant speaks:

"There's a bunch of kids who turn up as part of Xorn's remedial class, including the autistic Dummy, who can't be left for too long in one place or she'll just melt into the surroundings and Martha the Mutant Brain who first appeared during the 'Germ Free Generation' arc - she may only be a brain in a glass ball spiked with syringes but now she can hover as well. Just a bunch of weird 'difficult' mutant kids. Xorn elects to take care of the troublesome kids and there's some fun during a camping trip.

"The focus is pretty tight on the school so we're also developing several new students as characters. The big see-through jelly guy rises to prominence and we'll be meeting a number of kids from Frank Quitely's issue #126 cover as they get their turn in the spotlight. The students are the X-Men of the future so I'd like to introduce a lot of new characters and see which ones take."

Like the sound of Martha and the autistic kid. Very nice.

U-Men funerals, Genosha and Polaris, shades of Magneto, Ultimate doom, Logan ion the spotlight......

Yay.
