Preacher?

I was flipping through my Preacher tpb's and got to the origin of Tulip and once again came to the part that has always bothered me. How exactly did Tulip's father lose his hand? Is my tpb missing a page? In one panel he's got both hands and is in a boat and in the next he's reading Tulip a story and has a hook instead of a left hand. Did the shark eat his hand or something?

I would assume it has something to do with the shark in one of the panels (where they're fishing). I really liked that - a major mutilation gone totally unmentioned (save visually) because it was unimportant to the narrative.

That's what I had figured, but wasn't quite sure. I thought something might have been mentioned in the letters page. The first time I read it, I thought it was just a prop he was using in telling the story until I saw him hold up the roll of toilet paper with it. I have to agree it was an interesting take on the situation.

Look at that last panel before the transition. He's sticking his mitt awfully close to the shark's mouth. The thing is already hooked and considerably ticked, so I guess that messrs. Ennis and Dillon were being uncharacteristically discreet about what happened next. Maybe they thought that a bloody severed stump would somehow detract from Mr. O'Hare's gruesome demise later in the story.

Gruesome demise? I guess you could say his demise was gruesome, but I thought it was s sad sort of death. He was shot with his pants down around his ankles, which means he died with very little dignity.

Well, it LOOKED pretty gruesome! Granted, it wasn't as bad as some other deaths in the series (being crushed by an enormous fat man falling out of a helicopter comes to mind), but still...
