What happened to Gambit?

All my knowledge of the X-men comes from the cartoon (not sure if thats frowned upon) and what I pick up from these threads, but I don't think I've seen anyone mention Gambit, so what happened to him?

You mean you've not had the pleasure of reading the famous 'Gambit death issue' in which he gets burnt alive by pyro, receives colonic irrigation from a vicious hot-poker wielding toad, and then eaten by the blob?

It was a nuff said issue.

Knowledge do you leave your PC logged on, sometimes you seem quite normal and then all of a sudden, unless of course your being serious which I doubt

He's in the Claremont book. I don't pay attention to it, but I know he's in there.

Damn. I was hoping Knowledge was being serious.

I hate Gambit.

I don't think Gambit is a bad character so much as a character whom crap writers love to write.

Gambit currently appears in X-Treme X-Men, and near as I can tell, he's somehow on the run, and still pining for Rogue. Scott Lobdell was pushing the character out of the comic, he wanted to have the guy be revealed to be an evil creep and then get kicked out and try to weasel his way back in, in spite of all of the X-Men hating him. But the editorial got in the way, the fans liked him too much.

So, he basically just does the same shit all the time: flirts with Rogue, talks in an embarassing approximation of Cajun street lingo, and acts like a badass version of Robin Hood.

Some of the issues of the Gambit series were pretty good. He got his powers pumped up, went to the past, and there are probably some other interesting things that happened to him that I can't quite remember.

Does he still wear a "hard" looking trenchcoat over the top of a pink body stocking?

If not, I might adopt that look. It's guaranteed to strike fear into the heart of evildoers.

He doesn't wear a pink body stocking anymore. In Xtreme X-men he basically wears a bunch of black with a little red bandanna around his neck.

I hear Millar's 'Ultimate X-Men' book has an updated version of Gambit that made the character's haters quite happy. Haven't read it yet.

If you ignore the very very bad french accent that is.

(also Millar didn't write the issue. I read somewhere that allegedly he hates the character and didn't want to introduce him into the book so they got Chuck Austen to write the 2 parter instead)
