"...long-time Archie artist and Josie and the Pussycats creator died this morning of an apparent heart attack. He was 82 years old. Earlier this year, DeCarlo was hospitalized with triple pneumonia, but recovered, and was working on comic projects with DC and other publishers."

Yeah, I heard this the other day. Sad news indeed.

I have an original DeCarlo Betty and Veronica Summer Fun page from '63 on my wall - one of those charmingly innocent strips where the girls are prancing around in bikinis and the boys are leaping up in the air with their tongues unspooling. I love it to bits. It's framed on the wall of my office and whenever I have visitors they always stop to admire it.

An absolutely brilliant, hugely influential cartoonist (go read Jaime Hernandez's Love and Rockets stories and see how much he's informed by DeCarlo) - one of the very very best.

Unfortunately the above picture is from late in his life, when he was in the "old man drawing" phase. I wish they'd chosen an image from the 50s or 60s, when he was at his peak...

This is terrible news. He managed to draw about the most innocently-sexy cartoon characters around. I recently read an article that talked about his career and I had no idea he'd been drawing for so long. Perhaps one of a few artists who managed to bring comics into the mainstream consciousness better than anyone.

Zoom.
