It's the new Books of Magic series. If you've read the Names of Magic books, it'll make more sense, but it's still a good read on it's own. Basically, here we have Tim Hunter, a bit older than we last saw him, attending the White School. It's got the whole two-stories-told-at-once-with-one-told-only-in-flashback-scenes deal going on, which I've never really been a fan of, but it works well here. I'm still not sure if I like the art or not.

I never really read the Books of Magic series, but I still enjoyed this. It's worth two dollars an issue, anyway.

The only thing I didn't like was when Josh kills Garrock with a word of death. It didn't really make sense. Garrock says "you're a coward, you're nothing to Tim", and then Josh kills him. Totally out of character, really.

I saw an issue in the shop and looked at it because one of my favorite cartoonists, Richard Case, drew it. I have never had any interest in Tim Hunter (or really, any young bespectacled english magicians!), so I just kinda felt sad that Richard wasn't drawing anything I'd like to read, because I miss him.

I picked the first issue up because of the writer, Dylan Horrocks, whose work I follow, and thought , "mediocore". has it improved since then?

It has gotten more interesting; I’m enjoying it. But then, I quite like epic fantasy. Horrocks isn’t breaking any new ground here, but he’s telling a well-made story and working in a lot of wonder.

Actually, I may like the comic so much because it’s such an improvement over the old series. Not better than Gaiman’s original Books of Magic, which was brilliant and should be required reading for every child who likes Potter, but many times better than the childish and irresolute series that followed it.

I suggest reading the first arc (4 issues)and judging it by that.

I really think that only comic books which do break new ground justify their own existence... or at least justify my reading them but then I have my particular tastes.

i don't know...

everytime I pick up an issue, I feel like it's already been done before in some manor in the previous Books of magic series...

he's just "older" now but even that's prettymuch superficial, I haven't noticed at all how that's significant... & the Going to a magik school IS sooooooooo

Maybe, but at least it doesn't make you want to beat the snot out of nearly all the supporting characters.
