I hate the Kuberts.

I just need to get it off of my chest...all I ever see in the comics press, whether it be from fans or creators or people who seem like they may otherwise be tasteful intelligent folks LOVE Andy and Adam Kubert, and I just don't understand why. Am I the only one who sees them as the purveyors of shlock art that they are? True, Adam on occasion can draw a nice page with a nice background in it, but by and large CRAP in all capitals...

I do enjoy the Ultimate X-Men comic, Mark Millar writes fun comics, but they really do spoil that book and keep it from being better...

What do YOU think of the nepotism poster-boys?

I've never seen their allure. Ultimate X-Men would be thousands of times better if someone else was drawing it.

Good thing I erased that nasty post directed at you, Flux. Sheesh.

Brother Kubert is the reason I can't understand why anyone can even attempt to read that Ultimate X-men tripe.

But dammit, Joe kicks ass. Hopefully the Kubert drawing ability skips generations and we'll see a return to the family's stature as cartooning greats.

You know what baffles me about the Ultimate line?

They wanted to give the characters a fresh start, a new look, for a whole new generation of readers, right?

So they went and got the same guys who've been drawing X-Men and Spider-Man for the past decade to draw it...wha-wha-WHAT?

Logically, wouldn't you want to get someone to draw the characters in a way that no one had ever done before....?

Yeah, I'm sure all the 12 year olds out there really dig Mark Bagley...

oh yeah, I've got nothing at all against their dad...Joe Kubert is certainly a great draftsman and storyteller, and his style is really unique and special.

His sons...ugh. It horrifies me when I think about the fact that at the Joe Kubert School, Andy Kubert teaches first year fundamental drawing. That is just so far beyond the pale...I mean, if there is a person who desperately needs to take a class like that, it's him! The motherfucker can't even handle things like basic foreshortening and perspective...

Bagley at least tells the story and has clear, crisp art. He may not be exciting, but anyone can pick up one of his books and know what is going on.

I dropped Ulitmate X-Men because I got sick of the poor storytelling the Kuberts seem to traffic in.

I'm not putting down Bagley as a craftsman...I'm questioning why a comic line aimed at kids would be drawn by a guy who is so dry and conservative...how are kids raised on Pokemon, Playstation, and manga supposed to like that?

I happen to like both Kuberts, especially Adam. But I admit things don't work when one of the brothers inks the other. About Joe Kubert, I pretty much like the old guy's works; but I wouldn't say his style is "unique". Have you ever seen anything by Jordi Bernet?

I myself strongly dislike the art of brother Andy--his clenched-teeth, squinty-eyed run on X-Men really turned me off.

At the same time, I really enjoyed brother Adam's run on Wolverine, as well as his subsequent run on X-Men.

For that matter, I consider Bagley my favorite Spider-artist of all time, and I couldn't think of a cleaner, more dynamic artist for Ultimate Spider-Man.

Of course, I don't think any of these guys holds a candle to Cassaday (Planetary). So my question to you all is this: if you don't like the Kuberts, who would you say is your favorite artist today?

I will buy anything drawn by:

Frank Quitely
Eduardo Risso
Migeulanxo Prado
Pat McEown
Dave Cooper
Paul Pope
Darwyn Cooke
Chris Ware
Jaime Hernandez

These are the guys whose names merely be on the cover for me to purchase the book. I know, sight unseen, that it'll be masterful.

There's others whose work I like but won't necessarily buy.
