Jim Shooter to work with Marvel again

Marvel Comics, already building and repairing bridges that were burnt or fell into a state of disrepair with creators such as Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller and Alan Moore, have announced the completetion of successful peace talks with another creator some thought would never work at Marvel again, former Avengers writer and Marvel Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter.
Marvel has announced the veteran creator has been tapped to write a new Avengers project. His first new project for Marvel will be an eight-issue series that will also mark the return of the team's cosmic arch-nemesis known as Korvac. Senior Editor Tom Brevoort is reportedly currently narrowing down his choices of penciler for the project, which is scheduled for a release in May 2002.

"We're thrilled to welcome Jim Shooter back into the AVENGERS fold for this brand new cosmic epic," stated Brevoort. "His issues of AVENGERS - especially the legendary 'Korvac Saga' - still stand out in the minds of many as some of the definitive tales of Earth's Mightiest. From what we've talked about so far regarding the new project, Mr. Shooter surely has not lost his touch!"

"With the Korvac story under way, and another AVENGERS-related project in development, expect Jim to make a big splash in the Avengers' universe next summer!" added Brevoort. "As they say, 'Once an Avenger, always an Avenger!'"

"There were several balls that I started rolling early on in my first months as EIC, many of them public knowledge, and many of them top secret," explained Marvel Editor In Chief Joe Quesada. "Much like the upcoming AVENGERS/JLA crossover, getting Jim Shooter writing for Marvel again was one of those goals. During my early days in the comics industry, I watched with great admiration as Jim began creating the beginnings of what would become the Valiant Universe! It's because of that talent that we contacted Jim early on, and along Tom Brevoort, we've taken much care in developing a project that was going to show off his considerable skills!"

"I was warned from the onset that bringing Jim back to Marvel would ruffle a few feathers, but the way I saw it, there was no downside," explained Quesada. "First, I couldn't give a damn, and secondly, all the feathers being ruffled are on all the right people. When you look back at some of the greatest stuff ever produced within this company, a significant portion of it was created during his tenure as EIC. So with that said, it's a pleasure welcoming Jim back to The House!"

Kick ass! I was too young to read this guys stuff when he was popular, but I picked up the first few isses of Plasm and I loved them, the layouts, the art, the plot and the ideas. I will pick up his Avengers stuff, the first Avengers stuff I'll ever buy. (Apart from the last issue of Avengers West Coast way back when and the Bloodties tie-in issue. YAWNNN)

All I will say about this topic is that Harbinger was a really great comic.

and it became even better when Shooter stopped writing it.

I wonder how long until he pisses off the people he's working with to the point where he can't get an eitor at Marvel.

He may do some slightly above mediocre stuff (I still say Marvel in the 80's is the great watseland...anyone who was any good got driven off by the man eventually), but in today's market, mediocre comics just aren't worth buying. When they were 75 cents...I could stand something that felt like a halk ass effort. Now, if it's half assed at $2.50, I drop the book FAST.

I think that if I was at Marvel, I'd take the bulk of the conservative mainstream superhero comics which are meant for little kids and fanboys (Avengers, Captain America, Spider-Man, Hulk, Iron-Man) and print them on the cheapest newsprint available and drop the price down to something like a dollar, or less.

I think the sales of those comics would go up, because more people would be willing to buy cheesy disposable superhero comics if they came at a very low cost...

wow- if mavel was a 'wasteland' in the 80's what was it in the ninties? Shooter has many enemies in the industry - largely bad blood over his period as EIC at marvel, and while i probably won't be cheching out his avengers series i still think he's a tallented craetor and am glad to see him back making comics again.

It had to do with a rumor that started spreading around 1985-86 (I think it was 86 when I first heard it) that Jim Shooter had such little regard for his fans that his attitude about hyping the huge maxi-series, merchandizing event 'Secret Wars' (or was it Secret Wars II? I forget) was 'We could trick the little fucks'.

The rumor was that he said this to an employee or in a memo or something.

The rumor spread until the slogan started appearing on Pins at comic conventions and it continued to snow ball among fandom.

It was either right before or right after that fans started becoming aware of Shooter's 'Bad rep' and while it probably has no basis in reality, the 'We could trick the little fucks' thing is remembered by some as the beginning of the end for Shooter at Marvel.

Of course, I was 17 at the time and my memories are the memories of an immature fanboy.

Like most urban legends, I bet those of us who remember have our own versions.

Who remembers it differently?

that's exactly the scenario I worked out when I read that...

hm. Jim Shooter started writing comics professionally when he was 14. I guess he would know what was going on in the 'little fucks' heads...

Shooter wrote the only Marvel x-over that changed things, Secret Wars! Spidey's new costume, Thing leaving the F4 (for a bit), ummm, Kitty Pride breaking up with Colossus... errrr.... alright, things were altered a little. Damnsite more than any of the Infinity x-overs...

If you count the X-Men crossovers, most of those did change things a lot...Mutant Massacre, Fall of the Mutants, Inferno, and Fatal Attractions all had lasting repurcussions through the whole Marvel coninuity.

The Onslaught story sucked hard, but did have a sort of Crisis effect, since it resulted in a reboot of most of the line, and beginnings of Marvel as it is now.

This Shooter new is good and all, but the real news is that Jim Starlin is doing a new Infinity series. Sure, Gauntlet, War, etc. failed to have really substantial after effects, but you've got to love Starlin's take on those cosmic heroes. Or better yet, the villains! There was something kind of doomed about that Warlock and the Infinity Watch comic, but man those Thanos issues were classic. Starlin is the proto-Morrison psychedelic superhero writer. The original Warlock comics (the ones that got reprinted in the early 90s) were classics that really presaged the more self-referential revisionist stuff of the 80s rennaisance.
Him was always a stupid name though.

Infinity War was quite good even though it didn't affect anyone's continuity, Infinity Crusade was just dull from the word go and was just to tidy things up. That's what I liked about DCs crossovers of a few years ago, they did seem to be current with all the different comics, whereas Marvel's were always 'This story takes place before events in 'The ArseBandit's Battle!' in Issue 25 where the author rather annoyingly changed direction without warning us which makes our use of this character's powers incorrect!'

Nope, that was Geroge Perez writing. SAnd after Ron Marz on the book, I thought I would like ANYONE better, but Perez turned in a series of poorly plotted stories that weren't worth buying.

I wouldn't call Jim Shooter a "great" writer but he was the man behind "Secret Wars" which was a pretty fun book. At least when I was 12 or whatever I really liked it.

I will say this though, I don't know if he is a great editor or not but I do know that it was right about the time Marvel fired Jim Shooter from the EIC position that the company went right down the shitter and began putting out the worst shit in comics history for 15 years or so. It may be coincedence but Marvel was a lot better before they fired Shooter.

And no matter how much of an arrogant asshole Shooter is, he could never as much of an asshole as that Bill Jemas fuck. Motherfucker thinks he came up with Spider-Man for fuck's sake.

While Marvel's hiring, I wouldn't mind a job. Any company putting that many exclamation points in their press releases must be adding something to the water.

I loved Starlin's stuff. Not really into that style right now but every once and a while I get nostalgic for that sexy/space/fantasy vibe.

Crossgen seems to be going for that feel and failing horribly. The current generation of post-Image artists can't pull that stuff off the way guys like Mike Grell could.
