Books of Magic

Inspired by the need to find all of the rip-offs...er, homages from The Books of Magic perpetuated by this Harry Potter fella, I've finally bought and read the John Ney Reiber run for the first time over the last week. Any fans here? I have to say that I was much more impressed by the read as a whole than I expected to be by the several scattered issues that I'd read before. I still, for some reason, feel like I've missed something. A lot of things, really. At least part of this can be pinned on Neiber and the fact that he leaves a lot of story points unexplained or unquestioned, with things happening "off camera" and whatnot. Besides that, there is a lot in the series that I felt I missed because it seemed like he was alluding to works and/or myths outside of the series that I'm unfamiliar with. I have, for instance, almost no knowledge of fantasy fiction or the tropes found therein, so if there are a lot of familiar fantasy elements in BoM, that probably was responsible for some of my confusion. Anyway. Just interested in the broader perspective of fellow Barbelithers.

Yeah, it's weird, like issue 5 or something he makes a big thing about a Cold Flame acolyte move in next door who intends to seriously fuck up Tim's life, only for it suddenly to finish with Tim's evil older self turn up and incinerate him.

[Michael Caine] And there is no link between Books and Harry potter. Alright? Do I make myself blaahdy clear? [/Michael Caine]

heh... just saw that books of magic movie this weekend... errr... anyway.

Mostly I thought the Books of Magic was great... there where low points for sure... his Rites of passage trek accross America... but there where certainly GREAT moments!!!

Tim goes to Hell (as Mall) to find his girlfriend Molly... Great Great Great.

The later part of the series.. written by Peter Gross even picked it up a notch...

Especially the final solution to the mecanations of that Devil with the hourglass who's name I forget. ... barnabas. ... maybe?

BOM 1-25 Good!
BOM 26-50 Bad!
BOM 51-75 Good!

Names of Magic was okay but I was confused by the ending.

Hunter age of magic - haven't decided yet. I miss the entries in Tims journal that added a lot to the character. Maybe these will return.

IMO the gaiman stuff was the only stuff woth reading- writen to act as a beginners guide to the supernatural areas of the DCU.[/LIST]

Gaiman's mini-series was a definate standard setter... I wonder how the DCU and the vertigo Universe would have looked like if there wasn't the editorial split and topics like Magic allowed for more charactor usage... you know like Tim relating to DEADMAN or Dr. Fate or Dr. Occult.

Mark Millar did great work when carrying over charactors like the Spector in his Swamp Thing run.

Meanwhile... it's been too long to really recall what happened in which issues... but I agree that Peter Gross really closed that series with a BANG.

hated the most recient revamps... that Names of magic annoyed me in one issue... another mysterious father figure showing him something... more mysterous bad guys who want time dead... Bleeeeccchhh

I've tried reading Age of magic... but so far, BOOOOOOORRRRRRRing!!!

too bad
