When I'm inking Giuseppe's stuff I don't use a ruler at all - if you look closely at the "straight" lines you'll see that they're wobbly. I wanted a vaguely Euro feel (for a comic about an Englishman in America :P ) and didn't want the sterility of ruled lines. I ink the lines of cars, buildings, furniture, etc with Staedtler Pigment Liner pens. All the organic stuff, people, plants, and so on, are done exclusively with a number 6 brush. I don't like switching brushed because it's a waste of time - I've developed sufficient control of the brush that I can do big fat lines and razor thin ones.
I do all my rough sketches with Tombow brush markers - the X-Men drawings in the other thread were done with one of those - They really free me up. I wish I could ink a final book with them, but unfortunately the ink isn't permanent, so it smudges very easily. If I set my hand down on supposedly dry ink, the moisture from my hand will make it wet again and smear it, so I can't ink final work with them. A shame, because I find I often do my best drawings with brush markers... |
