I hear a lot of you extolling the virtues (nostalgic or otherwise) of these comics. I really enjoyed the North American ones, but is it worth my while to pick up the UK trade reprints?

there haven't really been any reprints of the uk transformers comics available in the US there was bumper sized 'collected comics' but they were also uk only and not in any way like a trade, basically its difficult to track down the issues if you are in the UK - i seroiously doubt many copies made it across the pond.

I've never read Transformers...REALLY is it worth buying the trade?????

Is it just a big nostalgia hit or is it worth reading?

I bought the second trade, END OF THE ROAD, today and looved it! But then i'm a big Transformers fan anyway.

For pure nostalgia, ye can't beat it.

IF, however, you never read any Transformers stuff and have no great love for them, I wouldn't recommend buying the trades. they are the final issues in the series and really are for fans only.

The stuff in the two recent trades is good stuff done (apart from the last few issues IMHO) by the writers and artists of the UK comic - who were given the chance to work on the US title,

For me, some of the best tales only ever appeared this side of the atlantic Especially the stuff guest starring death's head- hell even the extended transformers living dead stories were pretty fun, and Furman's whole take on time travel and willingness to portray the struggles of the transformers in the future was never really covered in the us tales.

There are some classic Transformers stories, and I hope you’ll excuse me if my memory doesn’t hold very well. The Man of Iron is eerie and atmospheric, and is about a nameless Autobot who is sent to search for the Ark. Active while the rest of the Transformers are still comatose, a mythology builds around him as he is sighted throughout the centuries.

Then there’s Target 2006, which did far more than any kiddies comic had a right to. It tied in to Transformers the Movie, bringing the main players (Hot Rod, Blur, Cup, Galvatron, Cyclonus and Scourge) back into the present day, an action that displaced Optimus, Prowl and... someone else (was it Ratchet?) into a parallel universe. If memory serves, there’s a brilliant issue in which, while on the run on Cybertron, Prime tells a badly wounded Outback what happened when they were displaced. Then there’s The Enemy Within, in which Brawn is pitted against Starscream. And Dinobot Hunt was just incredible - I wish I knew where these issues were.

So yes: it is well worth tracking it down. It’s been something like fifteen years since I read a lot of it (it’s a mark of the strength of the storytelling that I remembered that much!), but I’ve reread enough in the last couple of years to know it’s a hell of a lot more than just nostalgia.

From the looks of this, the two recent collections were just the beginning.

<really, really hopes so>

The UK stories are head and shoulders above most of the US stuff (though both have exceptions to the rule - the black and white 'Earthforce' stories, which were the last UK ones to be produced, do not compare favourably)

If you can get used to the storytelling style, which consisted of everyone refering to each other by name ('Get Him Wheelspin! ' 'Don't tell me what to do Tyrewrench! ' type stuff)then they are great entertaining operatic style action stories (i.e. no Alan Moore).

Most of the issues can be found on the web - Try http://www.gazliter.co.uk/Transformers/index.html

Any word if they're going to do the same for the British Action Force stuff (G.I. Joe in the US) I definately remember they had the same characters but better writers :-)
Silent Running with the silent ninja guy is one that sticks in the head.

<cheesy immature sci-fi geek> Pah! Heresy! The Go-bots were nothing but pathetic Transformers rip-offs!</cheesy immature sci-fi geek>

Although they did have the Rock Lords, the coolest transforming toys ever - they were giant robots from a planet of rock who, when they transformed, transformed into...bits of rock.

Honestly. You can keep your sistine chapel, your venus de milo, your three figures at the base of a crucifixion - give me transformers that turn into bits of rock. Sheer bloody genius.

Still not as good as Transformers itself, though.

On which note - what the hell is going on with the toys now?

I had heard (from local comics shop staff) that they were going to redesign all of the old characters for release soonish.

<almost thread rot>

While waiting for public transit in the lovely city of San Francisco yesterday I saw a man wearing a Transformers Hawaiian style shirt.

Short sleeved, gaudy, with the heads of transformers where tropical flowers would normally rest.

I tried to ask him where he got it but he only spoke French. He probably just didn't want anyone else to get one.

ERD, the transformers are alive and well and redesigned at a toy store near you. Well, depending on your geographic location I suppose. ON a slightly different topic, can anyone tell me which issues of action force the esteemed mr morrison wrote. I've recently discovered a place that has them and might try to become even more anal about owning all of grant's work.

zoom. (feelin' all lower-case today)

I believe there was one story in Action Force Weekly about how Storm Shadow(?) had trained with Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu, with art by Steve Yeowell. The 2nd one was in Action Force (aka GI Joe) Monthly 2 I think - Not sure off the top of my head - but try the bibliography at www.grant-morrison.com

Yes. 'Alive and well and redesigned' in the sense of Grimlock being made into a fucking truck.
