'tHE sTRANGE wORLD OF mEN'

Best comic i've bought recently.
Great stuff. Gilbert Hernandez (my personal favourite bros) doing a mix of Velvet Glove era Dan Clowes, Memento, That weird misoginistic Scourcese film with all the chicks hassleing the man...Great art as you would expect...BUY BUY BUY!

And interestingly the first Vertigo book i've really enjoyed in ages...Could be the start of something. Maybe after DC lost most of their 'vertigo' talent they realised that the typical 'vertigo' type comic was lying in ditch somewhere in the mid 90s. Could be they're going to start sucking up some of the Fantagraphics, Top Shelf, Drawn & Quarterly types...

I agree. I picked this up yeaterday and it's bloody great.

If they asked me for a quote to put on the poster I'd say;

"Like David Lynch directs Momento, but more fun."

Absolutely top stuff - just the kind of comic I love.

yeah, me too.

I love the pace of it, and the way incredibly unusual, unexplained things keep happening, but in a way that doesn't irritate or confuse the reader. An enviable skill.

Hmm. Confused the hell out of me. But I think the first issue of a six (?) part series is allowed to do that...

Yeah, but it's "what the hell's going on? I'm intrigued.." confusion rather than "what the hell's going on? this writer is clearly a moron" confusion.

It's certainly the great white hope of Vertigo at the moment..

So what's it about? Or don't you know yet...

And how is it Vertigo's great white hope if it's only gonna run for six iussues? While I ralise that they need to get more comics that limit their issue number's to a sensible degree, as big long sprawling things don't work (as people round ehre have said before... ), is this a sign that they're doing that?

I dunno really.
It's just the first thing they've put out since the end of the Invisibles that's been "Really Good!" rather than just "mmm .. not too bad, I s'pose."

Picked it up today and pretty much liked it. But I don't think it's the first thing Vertigo puts out since The Invisibles that's really good...Transmet still goes on

Picked it up because it was one of the only bright colourful interesting comics on the shelf of my local comics hole.
Wow is all I can say, this the is the same guy as who does Love and Rockets, right?
I'd go with the intrigued vibe that people have mentioned, heres hoping that Vertigo continue to use this clue they seem to have rented.

I recently was called 100% new and wrote some well irate stuff about that comic. I was pissed off with Vertigo at the time for canning Outlaw Nation. But, Outlaw has been dire for quite a few issues now anyway.

However, I won't continue with Grip. I can't be bothered, frankly. Sorry to irritate people who like it, but I just don't. I'm not into all that hyper-reality stuff when it's done the way this dude's been doing it. It's just not me.

Good to see that you've given up your one man assault on Barbelith...You'll proberly get more out of the place without trying to piss people off...

Yea i agree...It started off really well but started to flag after 8 issues or so but i think it would have picked up again. They really should have given it more time.

So what happened to this? Did it stay good? Is it being collected in book? Has it even ended yet?

dunno really .. I've got a feeling I missed the last issue..

Issues 2-4 weren't as good as the first one, but it's still an exceedingly cer-azy story featuring art and characters that I like .. could maybe have done with being stretched over more than five issues, cos there's an awful lot going on and a lot of of space is being taken up with flashback explanations, explaining all the weirdness that happened at the start (frrkin' sellouts - making it MAKE SENSE). Still pretty cool though.

it made sense???? It was lovely, and everything, but making sense? Noooooo.
I think I'll try reading it standing on my head next time. Sense?

Not exactly sure how I feel about this just yet. It seemed very similar to Beto's Fear of Comics stuff except...not non-linear enough? It seemed to embrace all-out weirdness and linear, finite narrative at the same time. Interesting, at the very least.
