Who was it said Ethan Van Sciver's art could really use a different inker? Gotta hand it to Townsend - it makes quite a difference, no?

Although there's something odd about the angle...

And what about that neat Lilandra cover? Eh?

Pisses on the Xorn one.

Guess it'll be used for one of the later issues. Shame. Can I say that this whole artist deal is starting to do my head in without anyone drawing nasty comparisons between me and Knowledge + 1? God, that name cracks me up.

You mean Quitely's not even doing the covers any more? <cry of frustration>

It looks as though Van Sciver is making an effort to draw the costumes properly, as Frank designed them, which is nice, because none of the other X-artists seem to be doing so.

And yeah, Townsend is the tops.

I'm sure he's still doing the majority of the covers, just not 122.

How are the artists paid? Per issue/page? What is the going rate for an artist considered to be among the best in the business?

Actually, I think this might be the cover for 123. Oops. Let me check that...

artists tend to get paid a page rate (ie x amount per page) the exact details of which are between the individual artists and their comissioning editor... i doubt you'll find many artists that will want to broadcast what their getting paid to *anyone* let alone to fanboys who will just complain that X who they don't like is getting paid y compared to z who is getting A

where X is an artist not much liked by one fanboy
Y his rate of pay
z is an artist more valued by said fanboy
A is his rate of ppay

And possibly a new penciller too.

Are the artists paid pretty well? If not, how do the slower artists manage to survive? If Quitely only does five issues a year, how does he afford to live?

Side note: do pencillers generally get paid a lot more than inkers?

Most inkers don't get paid well at all. Especially if you consider how much fixing they have to do on a crap penciller.

I don't know the exact figures, but I'm sure Quitely gets paid a very high page rate - enough that Wildstorm couldn't match it to prevent him leaving The Authority.

Many artists also supplement their income by selling off the original artwork - an artist of Quitely's stature probably does quite well from his originals.

Inkers get paid less than pencillers, the idea being that there's less work involved. But as K-9 says, sometimes inkers have their work cut out for them - there have been times when I've spent so long correcting poor pencils that if you were to break down my page rate into an hourly wage, I'd be making less money than the kids at McDonalds....

Cameron Stewart? Is that your real name? What have you inked that I've read?

ANSWER ME BOY!!!

CameronStewart

I dunno, what have you read?

Yes, it's my real name, though it should be pointed out that I've done both pencilling and inking in my relatively brief career.

I've worked on The Invisibles, The Dreaming, Flinch, Transmet, Swamp Thing, Hellblazer, Superman Adventures, Detective Comics, and more, and right now I'm doing Catwoman, my work on which begins at issue 5, some time in March (?).

The 2nd to last one. He's the artist with the "cartoony" style. Very nice.

>>>He's the artist with the "cartoony" style. Very nice. <<<

Thanks, but I'm trying to bust out of that "cartoony" pigeonhole (of course, I'm my own worst enemy here because the short strip I just did with Grant for the Scottish Opera is drawn in a very similar style). Expect Catwoman to look very, very different, however.

Those Invisibles pages were done well over 2 years ago now, and I cringe when I look at them - so many drawing errors . I wish I knew then what I know now...

And yeah, Knowledge, I'll fight you. Bring it on, motherfucker, I'll take you to school...

P.S. When I have the time between paying gigs (i.e. almost never), I've been working on some (unsolicited) New X-Men sample pages to send in...

Completely off-topic, but have you thought about doing the same for X-Force? I'd have thought it was more suited to your style, although if you're trying to move away from cartoony, maybe not...

CameronStewart

It's not that I'm trying to move away altogether from a cartoony style of artwork - cartooning is a very integral part of my work and I'll never abandon it (don't get me started on why I hate "realistic" artwork or we'll be here all day - ). But there's certain editors I know of who think I'm only capable of doing whimsical, lighthearted stuff because I draw women with slightly larger eyes than "realism" demands. I'm just trying to tone down the more cartoony aspects to demonstrate that I can do more than that.

I'm not making the effort to do X-Force samples because even though I like the characters, I get the feeling it's strictly a Milligan/Allred gig - Darwyn Cooke is doing a fill-in issue but that only came about as a favour swap with Allred for inking the first four issues of Catwoman. However, as we've seen, it looks as though New X-Men is open to all applicants...

I'll tell you what i've just finished writing the first issue of a comic called hunt me about this old guy who's so old he's forgotten where he came from and he's suicidal but has eternal life. The comics called hunt me and the first panel is the guy naked floating through the liquid of a nuclear reactor with this poem:

"You are so near, and yet so far,
your touch only a hairsbreadth away,
teasing me with your eternal sleep.
Whenever I sample your simple ecstasy,
my desire burns anew,
yet it is such a sweet brief flame,
suffocated by the winds of reality,
and the loss of feelings that would be nightmares to any other,
come sweet death,
play the game
hunt me"

I envisioned a sort of cross between art-style of David Mack and that guy who did the early issues of the crow.

Feel up to it you faggot?

Well Cameron, based on the success of folks like Mike Allred, Joe Madureira, and Humberto Ramos (to name only three), I don't think you would have THAT much trouble with a 'cartoony' style (though the latter two are a bit more in a 'manga' direction than you are...)
