<instead of just having lists, can you say whyyou thought these comics stood apart from everything else you've experienced this year?>

No.

The point of these threads is not any form of interesting discussion or cultural exchange, it is for all us sad fanboys to nurture the notion that Alyson Hannigan is going to call us up and say "I saw your list of best comics of 2001 and your list of unmissable albums, and you have the best taste I've ever seen and I want your 16-stone, hairy unwashed body NOW".

* barry ween: monkey tales by judd winick (oni press) -- because it makes me laugh out loud every time i read it

* finder: fight scene by carla speed mcneil (lightspeed press) -- i think this is issue #21 or #22. stand-alone story, serves as a fanastic introduction to the character

* atlas by dylan horrocks (drawn and quarterly) -- lovely format, fascinating story

* la perdida by jessica abel (fantagraphics) -- ditto

* private beach by david hahn (slg) -- nice art, intriguing premise

there's been tons of cool stuff out this year. will probably be back to tell more...

Star Wars: Tag and Bink Are Dead - I laughed harder at this than I have at anythign for about 2 years. Pure comedy gold.

New X-Men - this should be self-explanatory. It's new GM and it's wild and weird and wonderful.

Amazing Spider-Man - finally they get a writer who can interest me in this character. JMS is doing a great job with Spidey, whom I've always hated. Good super-hero fun.

7 Guys of Justice - super-hero comedy. Imagine Watchmen with a strange (stranger?) sense of humour.

War Story - I'm not usually one for the war comics, but Garth Ennis' stories are horrifying and moving.

Judge Dredd GN's - the new ones that Titan is printing. A lot of good fun. They've prompted me to track down old stuff.

Planetary - when it came out. Absolutely fucking brilliant through and through.

I'm sure there were more, but that's all I've got off the top of my head.

Oh, Richard Moore's "Horny Tales" and the latest "Xxxenophile" collection are good fun sex comics where no one is tied up, raped or beaten (helllooo Avatar). Absolutely recommended.

Zoom.
