DAREDEVIL

Welll...I don't know. Two issues in on the Brian Michael Bendis storyline, and I'm still not sold. I didn't warm to Bendis's interpretation of Daredevils world in the four part Ben Urich storyline way back when and this storyline too leaves me slightly cold and questioning whether Bendis has a plan for the man without fear - one that stretches past pointing out that he can hear all sorts of microscopic shit that we can't. Is there a heart behind this series or is it just grandstanding and cheap shock tactics pulling it along. (The kingpin is dead, you see, I'm serious.) 6/10

POWERS
Again, a little uneasy on this one. Maybe cause all the other comics I read this week were consistently brilliant or cause Oeming draws such similar backgrounds or cause there's a big SHOCK! Death scene really really gory holding this issue together. The dialouge is also a bit dodgy and suggests that Bendis is struggling with the four books a month gig he's currently running. But I'm not about to stop reading powers, as its still streets above the usual shit out there. And that scene is SPECTACULARLY gory. 8/10

FANTASTIC FOUR 1234

Well this fucking rocked. Brilliant ending and everything ties right up and the art is gorgeous and, well fuck man, the dialouge is amazing, epic stuff. Shakespeare for generation X. 9/10

PUNISHER

Don't know if it was because I was so stoned but I didn't really get this issue. It was good though, but very...mature. Given my lack of ability to judge fairly, and the past strength of the series, it gets 7/10

ULTIMATE X-MEN

This just kicks ass. Brilliant brilliant brilliant. A killer last page, a twist that will knock you sideways (You'll only appreciate it if you've been reading since the beginning) and lovely art and some truly evil work by Sabretooth. (I thought he was gonna cut chunks off Wolverine and make him watch whilst he chowed down on some BBQ'd Wolvie burgers) Loved it. "Abracadabra" 9/10

ELEKTRA/WOLVERINE: The Redeemer

Like this weeks issue of Hulk, this comic is both original and innovative and is attempting to change the way we read comic-books. The art by some Japanese guy is really nice, and perfectly accompanies Greg Ruckas rich and simple writing - In straight book format no less. The stories amazing too. My favourite read this week, and well worth £4. 9/10

OUTLAW NATION

Why are Vertigo cancelling this? Its brilliant post-modern American storytelling, and issue 15 is only just starting to hint at things to come. Was this written before the cancelation was announced? I bet yes. Remember the first year of Transmetropolitan? Kinda loose and easy-going and more character defining than anything else. It only started to pick up the momentum in its second year. Well that's what Jamie Delano is attempting here, and its superb. The dialouge is to die for. I love all the little things about this book. Vertigo are a bunch of thick cunts if they do end this series. 8/10

INCREDIBLE HULK

Nice. Written by Bruce Jones. The style is haunting and John Romita Jr elevates his art by making it darker and looming. The colouring is inspired too. Loved some of the weird panel layouts. Bruce Banner as Buddah, anyone? OOHHHMMMMMM 7/10

ULTIMATE TEAM-UP

Funny and made me laugh at least ten times. You have to read it to understand, cause it's fucking stupid. 8/10

WAR MACHINE

Yeah alright the art suffers cause of the black and white but the writing rocks and Chuck Austen is really coming into his own here. Lots of nice little elements and nice groovey dialouge, and its funny too! Dr Doom shows up on the last page too, which is nice. (But why do I suspect that Austen plans more than a few laughs at his expense, despite his ominous entrance?) This, as I said before, is well worth a quid and a lot better than some narrow-minded people would have you beleive. More, can sometimes be less. 7/10

I thought Ultimate X-Men #11 was just okay, it seemed a bit...off from the past few issues, which have been great. There seemed to be a missing dynamic in this issue, and I'm not sure what it is. I'm really interested in seeing how the Brotherhood work out (I didn't see that coming, yr right - but I wasn't really happy either, cos I wanted to see them get out of the situation on their own), and I want to know what the hell is going on with the Professor.

What is the next storyline after the Gambit fill-in issues, does anyone know? I can't really think of anything to go after this - I guess they could try going to Genosha, or do the Dark Phoenix/Shi'Ar/Hellfire club thing... maybe the Morlocks and the Marauders/Mr. Sinister?

It can't sell enough to make a profit. It's nearly DC's lowest seller, except for the loss-leader kids books. Sorry. I like it to, but if it can't make money, it's not a good idea for everyone on the book to work on it for free.

Um, how? Could you elaborate on that? What is it doing differently? I find it hard to imagine that a comic teaming up Wolverine with a half-naked female ninja is treading any new ground whatsoever, so I'm dying to know...

Absolutely not. If you don't explain in some way, I'm just going to assume that yr full of shit, and that it's nothing more than fanboy dross, as any reasonable adult would assume of an Elektra/Wolverine miniseries.

Maybe Wolvie gives it to her "Luke Cage Style." Groundbreaking indeed.

The japanese guy who does the art on the Elektra/Wolverine, is he Yoshitaka Amano? Because if he is, that's enough reason to get it. He was the artist from "The Sandman: The Dream Hunters"

Unlike, say, Ultimate X-Men and just about 90% of the comics discussed here.

As long as I'm talking about Ult X Men, let me just say that I thought the ending of the newest issue was a bit lame. No, I didn't see it coming either but, I would have expected Millar to save the Wolverine's friends from the Brotherhood save their former enemies shit for at least another couple of story arcs. I thought this issue was a bit of a letdowm after the last four or so. Maybe its because I think the Scarlet Witch is one of the stupidest characters ever (she does magic, right? Is magic a mutant power?). Will someone explain how she could remove the bombs from everyones heads without hurting them? Maybe shes bluffing and thats just some little Sony bits in her hands...I hope so, I'd like the team to have to deal with the bombs in their brains for at least a little while longer. And here I was, expecting the professor to use his big shiny brain to take over Division X and free the team. Oh well. Find out next month, I suppose.

I'm still waiting for someone scanning all the Warmachine comics and colour it themself. There is a cocmic TPB coming. Any Idea if that one will be coloured?
Would that make it more like Red Star (if done nice....)

You see, if I had done that, somebody would have quoted some choice bit (I particularly liked the bit about the relative apportioning of taste and body parts, mori - shame to have lost it) before I had a chance to delete it.

Hey ho.

MEanwhile....is War Machine actually any good. I've been buying Alias and reading Fury with vague amusement, but my eyes just seem to slide off War Machine. Is this crappy gaikokujin me failing to appreciate the joys of manga, or fastidious multicultural me abominating the "American Manga" style?

haus i have previews of the first three issues if you want 'em. as i've said before i cannot believe how wooden and static the layouts are and how much every character looks like they've been crudely copied from a computer generated image.

Listen, I'll look and see if they have that Elektra comic in the shop tomorrow when I pick up NXM, and look through it... If that drawing is any indication, there will be no impressing me. I've seen a bit too much of that drawing style to do anything more than gag when I see it.

I hate to get all Scott McCloud on you all here, but that is NOT a comic book, it's an illustrated storybook. There's a whole section of them at yr local book store or library. Lots of them are quite nice. Kids love 'em. But they aren't comic books, and hence they aren't at all revolutionary for the medium in any way.

And that illustration style certainly isn't treading any new ground. Visit any art school in America, and that much will be evident.

Um, yeah. I dunno if I want the way I read comics to be revolutionised. Kabuki did that, and look how dull that ended up being.

Yeah, it kinda reminds me of the dodgy stories they'd stick in the middle of UK annuals. Which were always invariably bad/cheesy.

But I guess it's different in a way, in the way and format it's being released, but it's clearly nothing 'new'.

While I've enjoyed Rucka's treatment of Batman in Detective... I passed on this book as well...

1234 #4!!! WOW... brought back Invisible shivers...

Powers was pretty good to... but I'm just not interested in Bendis's take of Daredevil... how has Alias been shaping up??? stopped after #2.

Ultimate X-men: well this is only the third issue I picked up... Didn't really like #1 & stopped, but just picked up #10 & dug it & #11... pretty good... makes me want to at least find the back Issues of that story line... it the TPB worth picking up?

Outlaw Nation actually was really good... this storyline has been the most enjoyable to date...

Daredevil Yellow: Lite reading... but enjoyable art as well...

what's hitting the stands this week???

yes, the Tomorrow People Ultimate X-Men tpb is worthwhile. I like that story a lot... funny, the only issue of the series I don't have is issue #1. I started with #2... Millar does a really good job, and keeps the comic fairly unpredictable and fun. It's a lot like his Authority work.

I didn't think the first six issues of Ult X Men were all that spectacular. I think the second story arc is much better.

Ronald Thomas Clontle
13:21 / 28.11.01
I think there is more meat to Return To WeaponX, but the story's pacing is really off in my opinion... the first and newest issues of that story could have/should have been maybe 5 pages rather than 23.

The biggest problem with Ultimate X-Men is that the Kuberts are very inconsistent...some pages will look really nice, others will be the worst hack-work this side of Image Comics.

I wish they'd get some competant artist to draw it.
