DAREDEVIL
Welll...I don't know. Two issues in on the Brian Michael Bendis storyline, and I'm still not sold. I didn't warm to Bendis's interpretation of Daredevils world in the four part Ben Urich storyline way back when and this storyline too leaves me slightly cold and questioning whether Bendis has a plan for the man without fear - one that stretches past pointing out that he can hear all sorts of microscopic shit that we can't. Is there a heart behind this series or is it just grandstanding and cheap shock tactics pulling it along. (The kingpin is dead, you see, I'm serious.) 6/10
POWERS
Again, a little uneasy on this one. Maybe cause all the other comics I read this week were consistently brilliant or cause Oeming draws such similar backgrounds or cause there's a big SHOCK! Death scene really really gory holding this issue together. The dialouge is also a bit dodgy and suggests that Bendis is struggling with the four books a month gig he's currently running. But I'm not about to stop reading powers, as its still streets above the usual shit out there. And that scene is SPECTACULARLY gory. 8/10
FANTASTIC FOUR 1234
Well this fucking rocked. Brilliant ending and everything ties right up and the art is gorgeous and, well fuck man, the dialouge is amazing, epic stuff. Shakespeare for generation X. 9/10
PUNISHER
Don't know if it was because I was so stoned but I didn't really get this issue. It was good though, but very...mature. Given my lack of ability to judge fairly, and the past strength of the series, it gets 7/10
ULTIMATE X-MEN
This just kicks ass. Brilliant brilliant brilliant. A killer last page, a twist that will knock you sideways (You'll only appreciate it if you've been reading since the beginning) and lovely art and some truly evil work by Sabretooth. (I thought he was gonna cut chunks off Wolverine and make him watch whilst he chowed down on some BBQ'd Wolvie burgers) Loved it. "Abracadabra" 9/10
ELEKTRA/WOLVERINE: The Redeemer
Like this weeks issue of Hulk, this comic is both original and innovative and is attempting to change the way we read comic-books. The art by some Japanese guy is really nice, and perfectly accompanies Greg Ruckas rich and simple writing - In straight book format no less. The stories amazing too. My favourite read this week, and well worth £4. 9/10
OUTLAW NATION
Why are Vertigo cancelling this? Its brilliant post-modern American storytelling, and issue 15 is only just starting to hint at things to come. Was this written before the cancelation was announced? I bet yes. Remember the first year of Transmetropolitan? Kinda loose and easy-going and more character defining than anything else. It only started to pick up the momentum in its second year. Well that's what Jamie Delano is attempting here, and its superb. The dialouge is to die for. I love all the little things about this book. Vertigo are a bunch of thick cunts if they do end this series. 8/10
INCREDIBLE HULK
Nice. Written by Bruce Jones. The style is haunting and John Romita Jr elevates his art by making it darker and looming. The colouring is inspired too. Loved some of the weird panel layouts. Bruce Banner as Buddah, anyone? OOHHHMMMMMM 7/10
ULTIMATE TEAM-UP
Funny and made me laugh at least ten times. You have to read it to understand, cause it's fucking stupid. 8/10
WAR MACHINE
Yeah alright the art suffers cause of the black and white but the writing rocks and Chuck Austen is really coming into his own here. Lots of nice little elements and nice groovey dialouge, and its funny too! Dr Doom shows up on the last page too, which is nice. (But why do I suspect that Austen plans more than a few laughs at his expense, despite his ominous entrance?) This, as I said before, is well worth a quid and a lot better than some narrow-minded people would have you beleive. More, can sometimes be less. 7/10
