As a comic book collector for a number of years, i've been a strong follower of the x-men, i've been there through the mutant massacre, fatal attractions, age of apocalypse, onslaught, op: zero tolerance, and every other cross over ever since....
my problem is, although grant morrison is writing New X-Men, i've become bored with every other title out there.....
i need suggestions, i wanna know what your favourite comics are, what do u collect religiously????
i need something.......please help....
P.S. doesnt have to be X-Men or Marvel, anything out there......

Planetary - unreservedly

Lucifer - much the best Vertigo Book, though the art is patchy.

Zero Girl - now finished. get the trade. Maybe try Sam Kieth's new thing (four women)

Frey - The Dark Horse future slayer Buffy spin off. Much better than it sounds.

Green Arrow - because I'm daft for the character, and Kevin Smith is having fun.

away from the mainstream

Berlin-
a truely masterful use of comics form and pacing to tell the story of the people of berlin from 1928 up until the end of WW2 the slow slide into fascism.
Jason lutes cool clear linework is a joy to behold

Kane
Paul grist
A police procedural that shows how comics can do better than NYPD blue without the need for superheroes

the authority- get 'under new management' TPB to see what comix the taliban would read (if they were allowed to look at images of people).

top 10- meta-science-hero comix meets hill street blues.

x-force- to see how horrifying super-heroes would get in real life.

and of course all of GM's back catalog- JLA, Doom Patrol, Animal Man, Aztek, etc.

Carla Speed McNeil's FINDER: black and white indie anthropological science fiction with at least as many mad ideas per issue as Grant Morrison's best work, and more honest-to-god character than a year's worth of any X-MEN book you'd care to name.

But don't take my word for it: you can read whole issues online at http://www.lightspeedpress.com .

Two trade paperback collections available already and a third on the way. Get them and prepare to have your mind blown.

Any of Alan Moore's Awesome Universe stuff. Awesome folded a few years back, but if you can find his runs on Supreme, Youngblood, Judgement Day and all the little miscellaneous stuff, it's great. I'd almost go so far as to say it's better than his current ABC stuff. Except Top Ten.

Battle Pope - so.damn.funny.

Liberty Meadows - fills in that Bloom County-shaped hole in my heart.

Transmetropolitan.

Midnight Nation.

Zoom.

I highly recommend Promethea, Planetary.
But also the Legion, nice superhero scifi fun.

Oh and Fray - Future buffy action!!!

Planetary
Hellblazer (bring me the head of Nicolas Cage!)
Transmetropolitan
The reprints of Matt Wagner's Grendel series (if you didn't catch them the first time).
Powers
Powers. I cannot emphasize this enough.
Age of Magic. Tim Hunter is the anti-Harry Potter, and that's a good thing!

Oh...I bet this topic will get lots of posts. At least for me, I love making recommendations:

- Transmetropolitan: been following it from #1, and five years later it hasn't yet dissapointed me
- Planetary: again by warren ellis...now this is a comic that began being great and it became an even greater thing...Probably the best superhero-related comic I buy
- 100 Bullets: same as Planetary, it began great and now as we see the big plot unfolding, it's even better
- Spiderman's Tangled Web: not all of the series; but try to catch the "Flowers for Rhino" story-arc by Milligan and Fegredo that ran a few months ago...I don't like Spiderman at all, but I loved this one. And don't be tempted by the Ennis one!!! For me at least, Ennis hasn't written a single good thing since...well...since Jesse Custer came back from France I guess
- X-Force
- New X-Men
- Four Women: the latest by Sam Kieth...issue #1 is out and it's pretty good.
- Powers: this is a good one...really overhyped, but a nice read though.
- The Atomics: Anything by Mike Allred is worth your money, and features Madman and the ex-Mutant Beatniks. It's not monthly anymore since he started X-Force
Also, I should add that some friends keep telling me that Wildcats and Legion have become interesting lately.

I'll second FINDER. Just finished the first trade paperback.

I'm afraid you're going to get quite a long list of comics from us. It may be difficult to sort out.

There are classics:
WATCHMEN (You've heard of this)
MAUS (Won Pulitzer. It has to do with Concentration Camps in WWII. A very human tale. Most personal thing I've ever read, and not in the way you'd think)
FROM HELL (well, it will be a classic)
JIMMY CORRIGAN (I have to be careful on this one. If you need happy stories, don't buy this one)

I also rather like Kyle Baker's comics. He writes fairly light-hearted, funny comics with really nice art. Loom him up on Amazon.com

"Will Eisner is a comics master." I collect this guy's stuff, but I do admit it doesn't vary much.

Oh, and I take it you've read INVISIBLES.

I've noticed that I didn't mention any monthlies currently out. This wasn't intentional. It just happens to be my buying habit at the moment. These are all for sale, however.

Actually i'd like to stick my head above the parapet and say avoid transmet. or at least get the first trade (the first three issues) but the series begins a slow decline from there onwards which gathers pace from 25 onwards...

tpb's :
any of Paul Chadwick's Concrete,
Dan Brereton's Nocturnals: Black Planet,
The Stars My Destination (if you can find it, but read the novel too),
I'll second Berlin,
Enemy Ace: War Idyll by George Pratt,
Enemy Ace: War In Heaven
there's more I know, so maybe I'll post again

Try:
Paul Pope's THB, Hellblazer, Top 10, Planetary, Fury, Powers and some of the Avatar Warren Ellis stuff (Dark Blue, Strange(er) Kiss(es), Bad World). If you're craving a good superhero story, I suggest all of the Stormwatch and Authority trades. Phil Jimenez's Wonder Woman hasn't been too bad.

I just bought a couple issues of Finder and found them a little boring. The concepts were creative, but the execution wasn't very driving. Am I missing something?
