Doom Patrol- All new, All different, all crap!

This isn't a 'Doom Patrol is crap because Grant isn't writing it any more' post, this is a 'Doom Patrol is crap because it isn't very good'. Gone the quirky cast of misfits who were too disabled to function in society and too ugly to be in the Justice League, here we have a bland identikit of heroes with some pretty crap superpowers who have the slight problem of not being able to use them very well. They have a website which is probably better than they are.

So in desperation their rich manager/backer finds Cliff Steele, living incognito (as much as he can) and working doing the shit jobs in a chemical plant to become team boss, much to the displeasure of the original boss.

Basically I see the hand of 'X' over this. The X-Men movie has reminded DC that they had the team that the X-Men seemed to rip off, so they brought it out of cold storage. Unfortunately it resembles the charisma-free version of the original New Mutants or Generation X. I don't give a shit about any of the characters because none of them show any proof that they actually have one. Only three of the five (including Cliff) have powers that could be used offensively, and all three of them need to be in contact or close proximity.

So, most of the Doom Patrol's last team should still be around, Dorothy, the string people, Kate. Where are they?

All the successful comics set out their stall in the first issue. The closest the new DP gets to that is the feeling of 'there are other groups that could do this a lot better'. What sort of world threats could they face? What niche is there for them?

Tan Eng Huat's art is alright, looks a bit familiar though I can't say of who (Jae Lee? I must admit, remembering artists isn't my special skill) and John Arcudi's script isn't bad, just dull.

Comments, Opinions, Rocks?

Haven't read it, never will. Your post merely confirmed what I already knew to be true.

Someone I know pointed out that the new Doom Patrol is a thinly-disguised ripoff of Gen13. Made a convincing case, too, but I can't remember the specifics...[/LIST]

A damning indictment if ever I heard one.

I can't help myself. I just love Cliff so much I have to read it. The first issue was kinda crap, but look at the first episode of Star Trek TNG. It blew. I still wonder how that show stayed areound so long with such a bad first season.
The art is ok. More super-heroy than the DP should perhaps be. I'm hoping that this story with the young heroes will just be a parallel for what happened before Grant took over, and something really weird and beautiful will come out of it.

Zoom.

I was okay with the first issue until I went back and reread Crawling from the Wreckage.

I’m dropping the series, thanks.

It's a bit like with Swamp Thing, they ruined what went before. By buying the first issue I've ensured that it'll be cancelled, strangely I don't feel at all guilty.

Bumpin' it on up...
I bought some of these a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure what I think of it yet. It interests and intrigues me and yet is still not terribly good. Not terribly bad, either, but...well, yes: dull. It actually is somewhat similar to the new X-Force (superteam sponsored by a corporation, fights over the name, etc.), but not nearly as good. Which is funny, since Doom Patrol used to rock and the Doom Force special was pretty much all about how much everything to do with X-Force sucked back then. I'm keeping an eye on the series for the time being, though, because they are apparently bringing back another character from the old series. Looks like it'll probably be Dorothy, but we shall see. Hopefully, whoever it is will add some much-needed spark to the book.
