Morrison on New X-Men Muslim character

quote:Q: Do you foresee yourself altering or addressing the type of widescale destructive action and the type of violent conflict that is so common in comic books?

A: "To be honest, I'd already been moving away from the recent vogue for ultra-violent problem solving in our superhero comics. THE INVISIBLES critiqued the need for violence in the media and NEW X MEN is very much a pacifist futurist comic, as will become more apparent over the next few issues. I'm currently working on NEW X MEN #126, which introduces a devout Muslim girl to the team. I'm interested in 21st century solutions to 20th century problems and will continue to explore them in my work."

<editors note: During our San Diego Comicon coverage, it was reported here at Newsarama that Morrison would be introducing this Muslim character, which he described at the time as being "very sexy because as a devote Muslim, all you'll be able to see is her eyes". Newsarama described her power in our report as being like a "human bomb".

This description was inaccurate. Describing her appearance then, Morrison actually said she would resemble the old Quality character 'The Human Bomb'.

"I couldn't help noticing the similarity between her veiled appearance and the Bomb's radiation suit," Morrison explained to us Thursday. "The Muslim girl is not a 'human bomb'. Her power has nothing to do with explosives and is a new mutant ability I made up especially for her."

Newsarama apologizes to Morrison and our readers for that error.>

With all due respect to Grant Morrison, sounds like backpedaling to me. But hey, I would too.

Hardly seems like a retrospective interpretation: it was very clear to me, even at the time, that Grant was creating a straw-man image of the ultraviolent Hollywood-thriller in INVISIBLE V.2 only to knock it down: THAT, if anything, was the big hoax. The Kiss Kiss Bang Bang of "Black Science" and its immediate successors was a set-up, a con job, intentionally over-the-top. King Mob's atrocities, in particular, escalated until even he said Basta! and consciously rejected not only violent methods (living by the sword), but the notion of the inescapability of violence (dying by the sword).

All these hints were being thrown out that the King would die violently before series' end, but he managed to transcend his violent nature for more transcndent, lateral problem-solving (as opposed to Jolly Roger, who continued to live by the sword--and eventually die by it)--has his past sins expiated by the kindness of Audrey Murray and in the process lays his own violent nature to rest, unmourned, and goes on to live a peaceful, productive life.

Entirely consistent.

Nah, Grant is far more creative than having a Muslim girl who is a human bomb. I had the feeling that the initial report was incorrect straight away...

Suddenly, the idea of a Muslim Human Bomb seems likely to cause great big stinking fights and accusations of tactlessness...

Unfortunately, the reality of Muslims, Humans, and Bombs are already causing great big stinking fights and accusations of tactlessness.

I trust GM to write a character who's more than an allegory for Islamic Fundamentalist Terrorism. Having a Muslim member in the X-Men, even if she does have explosive-type powers, might go a long way toward dispelling some of the fears that non-Muslims have.

A writer of Grant's skill can bring a character "to life" in many ways, and I think that the more people are exposed to individual Muslims, even fictional ones, the less fear and prejudice will exist against all Muslims.

Is that completely or just partially naive on my part?

I don't think so. I think he's going to be doing the same thing with Xorn, maybe even Angel too. demystifying the other can be a great thing...even if the way in doing it is somewhat small...those viral memes can work magic...

Is this the character who's supposed to be 'like the Human Bomb'?

If so, could that be her at the back of Emma's classroom in Genosha towards the end of #115?
