Marvel bans smoking.

I don't agree with this... it's silly and kneejerk, and it completely contradicts their rationale for why they dropped the comics code.

and it's always been explained that it is alright that Wolverine smokes because of his healing powers...

Yes, but he's a role model for millions of little kids who like bloody villians and want to be able to heal instantly after being hit by a semi-truck. Sheesh. It makes perfect sense.

The Punisher will now use diplomacy, rhetoric, and passive-aggressive mindgames to get his way from here on out, I'm sure.

Just as well for Marvel's sales that Quesada didn't lose a parent through breast cancer...

You know this sounds far more interesting than the Punisher using violence to solve his problems all the time.

Ha!

Rogue fans would be outraged, for sure.

It is true, isn't it? I'm sure for some people a stern lecture may be more of a punishment than a bullet, you know?

I just hope they try to maintain continuity with this, and have characters either quit, and have a period where they're all stroppy and can be seen wearing nicotine patches, or alternatively, have scenes where (eg) wolverine pops out for five minutes to stand behind the bike sheds for no-adequetely-explained reason.

I hope the ever-resourceful X-hacks 'hide' their 'message' within a suitably villainous NEW! SUPER! TEAM!

NICK O'TEEN!

TUMOUR!

EMPHYSEMO!

SPUTUS!

CARCINOMA!

THE HUMAN, ER, FAG!

Nick Fury. Dum Dum Dugan. Ben Grimm. Logan.

Fuck you, Marvel Comics.

As an aside, maybe we can use "The Human, er, Fag" as our Open Source Character.

Superman once faced a villian called this who taught kids how cool it was to smoke, I remember finding it in a health clinic place.

Superman kicked his ass old skool style.

I remember it well. That's why I never smoked, bub.

(Obviously, I discovered The Adventures of Northstar shortly afterwards...)

If you had really followed the path of Northstar wouldn't you would have disappeared, never to be seen again, two minutes after mysteriously turning gay?

I was going to say: 'Come on! Who ever started smoking because a bloody comic book character does?'

And then I thought a bit harder and decided not to.

>>>Presumably they'll stop 'promoting' guns, too... <<<

Apparently in addition to the ban on depiction of smoking, Marvel artists have been dictated not to show bullets hitting bodies in the same panel as the guns firing them.

Halfway playing the Devil's Advocate here - is all this really such a bad thing? We as adults can be all outraged that classic characters such as Nick Fury just aren't the same without the stogie, but kids new to Marvel Comics wouldn't know the difference. And kids still seem to be Marvel's primary target audience - as they really should be.

Is making an effort to prevent kids from taking up smoking such a deplorable act?

But Marvel comics aren't for kids are they? Kids of what age bracket?

Little kids? They can't afford comics at $2.25 to $3.50 an issue. Not without Mommy and Daddy. And what parent (that doesn't already read comics) is going to take their child to an out of the way comic shop for the newest issue of X-men when they can just get some Pokemon cards at the mall? If Marvel wants to target children they should do it with a seperate line of comics (I've never seen any of the Ultimate titles at the local Toys 'R' Us).

Teenagers? Show me one teen that started smoking because a hairy midget in blue and yellow spandex was doing it (in a comic) and I'll show you a fucked up kid. Teenagers aren't going to want Captain America, they're going to want Preacher. It makes no sense that Wolverine can disembowel a dozen bad guys but he can't light up afterwards.

As for the "bullets and bodies" in the same panel bullshit...well, we wouldn't want kids to see the ramifications of violent actions would we?

Madness. All of it.

Well, yeah, yr right...so few kids read comics now that it simply makes no sense to continue to try to make things especially for them...if Marvel really wanted to do well, it would start gearing its ENTIRE line to brainy adults, and go after the intellectual hipster market in a big way. And THEN kids may actually want to buy the things, if they become somethng that adults do, like cigarettes, and booze and r-rated movies...

Don't know about your area, but Safeway carries marvel and mainsteam DC comics around here. And I have seen kids standing in the aisle reading comics while parent's are off shopping. Kids tend to be around 10 or 11.

Ah yes, the parents that care about their children so much they leave them unattended in a large supermarket. Marvel must protect these poor boys and girls from the dangers of smoking while their parents go to pick up a half rack of Schmit Ice from aisle 3...The market I usually go to has a small rack of comics located alongside the magazines and paperbacks. Every time I look at it I wonder why Marvel and DC don't have a line of comics that caters to the 5-10 age bracket. DC does have a childrens line (Batman Adventures, ect.) but they are never on the stand at the grocer.

Is it just me or does anyone think these new restrictions are designed to make the MAX line look cool? I can see Marvel toning down all of the Marvel U books and creating a MAX-X-Men book where Wolverine smokes, drinks, curses, and gives oral to Emma Frost sometime in the near future. Come to think of it, that doesn't sound so bad...

GO MARVEL!

If kids are like I was (and apparently, this makes me "fucked Up, but), they will be more likely to think something is cool if they see admirable people doing it. I'm thankful that I had enough anti-smoking memes to keep me from ever starting, but I have been influenced in other ways. Sometimes, it's peers. Sometimes, it's fictional characters, and sometimes it's something else. But it does happen. In fact, fiction can still have a major influence on my life. I can name a few: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Invisibles, The Last Temptation of Christ, Back to the Future. I honestly believe that if I were to meet some alternate version of myself that hadn't seen/read these things, I wouldn't recognize him. That's actually why I read fiction. To change my mind.

Marvel banning smoking will not stop any one particular child from smoking, and it couldn't have enough of an affect on the culture to find statistically. But I don't think it's a bad thing.

Regarding guns and violence. I know that there's a big difference between smoking and gunning someone down. At the same time, more people in America die from smoking than from guns.

Maybe what Marvel is doing is silly. And I think it would be worse to promote scorn for smokers than to promote smoking. (I'm using the word "promote" out of laziness) But I don't think that's what they're doing. And it isn't censorship. And good for them. For doing what they THINK is the right thing, even if it isn't.

Johnny Storm will no longer "Flame On!" as this encourages children to set themselves on fire.

I'm almost positive there was a Byrne issue of the FF that actually dealt with that very scenario.

And, please, keep it quiet. Let's not give Marvel any more ideas, eh?

If i recall, it was in the midst of the Secret Wars II nonsense. A young fan doused himself in gasoline and lit a match to be like his hero, Flame Guy was so distraught that he considered quitting the FF because stupid people are always more important than big monsters. Someone probably showed him how important he was to saving the world from peril and hit him a few times and he rejoined the gang. John Byrne, always there with the masterful plot developments.
