just noticed something great. JLA # 23 (!) has the title page on the left side (p. 4) + an ad on the right side- struck me as a bit unusual. # 23 is the second issue in the return of starro- its got that basic post-modern/magickal/gnostic view- people + reality are made up of stories/discourse.

GM's hit upon this in most of his books- Starro is taking over people's dreams in order to invade them- ala the candlemaker, the legion of legions- GM lately talks about corporate sigils + advertising in general accomplishing the same thing.

the title page says 'CONQUERORS' and the facing ad is a incredibly understated coke ad- 80% of the page is just 'Coke red' (they've conquered a primary color!)- in plain black at the bottom, slightly cropped out, is 'thirst'. there's no message really to the ad, it is clearly meant to resonate on a more subliminal level .

did he plan this? I looked thru the rest of my JLA issues + most of them have 2-page titles- does anyone know the process, whether he could have specified an ad or even a coke ad on that page.

It's just a happy accident, weirdly appropriate synchronicity like the King Mob-a-like Woody Harrelson on the back of Invisibles #1.

Writers and artists have, to my knowledge, no influence of the placement of adverts in the books (possible exception being Promethea, which is cleverly composed entirely of double-page spreads so that the ads are all forced to the back - but that's just being crafty).

Come to think of it, aren't most (if not all) of the ads in ABC books in a cluster at the back of the book ?

Promethea certainly needs it that way, no question; those double-page spreads are so well designed, it would really break the flow to suddenly have some advert in the middle of it...

Well, League of Extrordinary Gents. didn't have any (real) ads in it at all, as I recall..
