it's happened again - i've just seen the new issue of diva magazine. it contains an interview with 'indie rockers' spy 51. the same spy 51 who i suggested i write about for diva months and months ago and never got so much as a 'no thank you'. the journo who did the interview is more well known than i am, though i've written a few bits for diva and got good feedback from readers. if i said the article was *shit*, i'd be biased, wouldn't i? at least i wouldn't have wasted valuable word space waffling about which dyke member of the band is the cutest. strangely enough, i was only interested in the music. journo pecking order fucks me right off.

But getting back to the topic- ie the use of a pitch idea by a publisher that hasn't paid for it/given credit for it it might be a good idea to raise it with them and see what they have to say? (I've never really had to pitch many ideas to mainstream mags so this could be a bad idea)

Its also probably a good idea to keep dated copies of all pitch ideas sent out

SFD- you don't have to be rude or abrupt with them (though you probably want to be) Just call up the editor you've had most/best contact with and chat about something- hell maybe even some new pitches you have and casually mention that you saw the spy 51 article and you thought it odd cos you'd pitched one (that focused on thier music rather than their shagability) a while back to and got no response.

Make it as hard for them to be offended as possible whilst still gently making your point - that you came up with a pitch for a better article first, but got no reply.

Angel, is a lot better at this sort of thing than me, but it often gets better results.

Nah... the 'Butch Rage' thing was deliberately ironic and pisstakey, and originally rose up out of a Barbe-conversation where aggressive and assertive were problematically conflated in relation to non-girly girls. Of course, the 'Butch Rage' shirt could never really be worn *outside* for the reasons that you state... but I still want one...

rosa - understand and agree with your point, but it was just a joke - i'm considered 'butch' because of the way i look, but had a femme complain that my behaviour didn't adhere to the stereotype and she was disappointed! should've made this clear, though.

as for pinching the pitch - well, it happens all the time. i'm just arrogant because i know i'm a better writer, etc.
