Has anyone read the Swamp Thing series written by Rick Veitch? I have enjoyed both Moore's and Millar's take on the character but I have only read one issue of Veitch's series. Is it any good, or even worth checking out? I understand that one of his stories was banned because it involved a very controversial topic:Swamp Thing as the Cross that Christ was crucified upon. Has anyone ever read his series The One? Thoughts on both?

well, I've not read The One, but his swampy was okay man. yeah, riding alan's big ole root, he guided old thingy through time as opposed to space, which effendi had already done. I was sixteen and could score it in my local newsagent - fuckin weird that. piles of DC stuff like the Spectre and that, the Question, yeah....strange time. anyway that added to the enjoyment - quarter o cola cubes and swamp thing 66 please. 'Yes, shopkeeper, the artist has taken over the writing chores on this title. Last month. Used Constantine straight away. It's suggested for mature readers. It's about a walking bush and his witch bitch. ha ha. Creme Egg. Will you get it monthly? And can you not write my name on the corner of 2000ad either? Cos I collect them.'

sixteen year old me's hangover would never have been cured by invisibles no 1 if not for that monthly drop, aaaaaah, cheers.

veitch did an issue during moore's run, tho very near the end, with mr s. thing meeting metron and darkseid and that. only alright. veich's rare bit fiends is perhaps his best stuff, excellent meta-commentary on the bissette/moore/totleben run, cool dream diary fun.

I though Veitch's run on MAXIMORTAL, his meditation on the creation of Superman, was much better than his Swamp Thing stuff. Also, it's a bit more linear than the Rare Bit Dreams, which ain't saying much. Hopefully, those maximortal's are cheap.

That's pretty interesting story: could anyone delve a bit more into it? It got me curious.

Which issue was this story planned to be?

Would've been #88.

Can't find a script online, but there are annotations here.

Neil Gaiman, on a convention panel, described it as "real Sunday school stuff," i.e. quite reverent. Apparently it featured DC's Roman-era hero the Golden Gladiator as a centurion, saying a la John Wayne in The Greatest STory Ever Told, "Surely, this man was the son of God!"
