Morrison on X Men

From Comicon

quote: NEW X-MEN/MORRISON

The Shi-'ar Empire will show up in New X-Men soon and cause some real destruction.
He also wants to do something with Phoenix soon, describing it as almost the reverse of what Chris Claremont did…exploring what would happen if Jean really was a goddess.

"Scott is headed towards the most majestic nervous breakdown ever," said the writer.

On the White Queen, he said, "She' like a shark in a minnow tank. She's going to make a move on every male character for her own sick reasons, including Scott."
Her new power is she can turn to organic diamond, but when she does she loses all her compassion and empathy. She's terrified of Jean but acts tough around her because Jean's the only person who can really beat her.

The school will become the focus of everything in New X-Men.
"The concept of school was made by humans for human based on the 9 to 5 schedule that the industrial revolution put us in," said Morrison. "Mutants aren't humans, so why do they need to have a school in the human manner? Essentially the students are going to be allowed to run the school and we're going to see how they'll do it.

"This is the next wave, these are the people who will be making the next civilization. So Prof. X sees that as well, so the students are allowed to do what they want. Why limit them to humans laws and rules?"

Speaking of new characters, he said the new Angel is trailer trash who will be trouble… someone who goes into the surrounding towns and gets in trouble with boys.
"Prof X. will find himself having to deal with issues he's only seen on Jerry Springer," he said

A very powerful Chinese mutant who appears in the 2001 Annual will be in the school and perhaps on the team later.

And a Muslim character will be introduced and Morrison said she'll be very sexy because being a devote Muslim, all you'll be able to see is her eyes. Her power is that she's a like a human bomb.

Addressing the new costumes' "florescent-ness" Morrison said he dressed them to look like municipal workers. He reasoned everyone would ignore them because people would figure they're there to collect the garbage or dig a ditch, and that's why they have the big yellow florescent X's.

Morrison is halfway through the next Marvel Knights Marvel Boy series and he said his upcoming project with Chris Weston The Filth is coming in January, and he called it, "kind of a team book, but the most diseased book you've ever read"
Another new project, LeSexy will be out in the middle of next year. It's described as six issues of very black comedy. No artist has been assigned yet and he didn't name the publisher of that or The Filth.

Finally, asked if he'd ever get back to doing any artwork himself, Morrison said in jest to a big response, "Probably if Frank Quitely keeps this shit up".
He said he might do something next year if he gets time.

Okay, look at this, and tell me what you see.

A large, bear-like man in leather, jumping on top of and holding down a young man who looks like a chicken.

Hmmmmmm.

And then there's this: the guy who drew that page attacked by bear.

Hmmmmmm.

Life imitating art? Publicity stunt? You decide...

Dubious black humour aside, that's got to be the coolest superhero concept in ages..

Not pickin' on you, Riz, but it's prolly the most trite and contrived concept he's ever used. Oh let's see, I'll sexualize the current state of the other and then give her a power commensurate with the dominant media portrayal of the Muslim world. 5 bucks says they rescue her from a terrorist cell using her for bombings. bleh

And I'm sure somebody already mentioned Diamond Lil, but I thought I'd ask why this power even makes sense for Emma Frost?

I agree. Though the Muslim character really isn't all that funny nor interesting. And Morisson said that Frost was going to have a power nobody had ever had before, but Diamond Lili has had it before (and it's a fairly stupid power).

But pretty much everything else sounds pretty cool.

And about the Beast/Ethan Van Sciver thing... weird. Is Grant using his hypersigil powers to terrorize the fill-in artist? hmmm...

Trite concept or not, I think we've already seen her, or at least someone who fits that description.... She was one of the students in Emma Frost's class...

If she survived, that is...

Er, there's a misconception here, I think. Morrison never said the Muslim character would have the powers of the Human Bomb. He said she'd be "like the Human Bomb", which I took to mean that all we'll see of her is a little patch over the eyes, while the rest of the body is completely covered.

To clarify, for those who are not students of obscure-comics history, such as Ray, the Grant, and myself:

The Human Bomb = an old Quality Comics character from the 1930s, who co-starred in POLICE COMICS with Plastic Man. revived by DC in the 1970s. Here's the best pic of him I could find on the Web:

He's in the white containment suit, off to the right, behind Uncle Sam.

I always liked the Human Bomb. What a great non-costume. And the power of self-explosion. Rad.

In what way does being like the Hoth Stromtrooper-looking Human Bomb negate or alter any of the contested comments. Same look, only black, with Muslim robes. Same powers. Same sociocultural context. But it's cool, yah?

Jack, who are the other characters? Uncle Sam... and I recognize The Rock and Chyna on the left.

Regardless of political context, I just like the idea of a comics character who wears a Yashmak and regularly explodes..

She's Katie Kaboom, Katie Kaboom.
She's lives in a house witha garden in bloom.
Her family knows that anytime soon,
Their pretty lady, Katie, goes - Kaboom.

No Yashmak, though.

It's also great fun that the concept is mutants defining their own civilization but adherring rigidly to stereotypes. But I digress, this is a thread for open-mouthed awe. and I have plenty for the Shi'ar Empire and Goddesses. Particularly the interplay between the two.

And I want to see at least one panel of the Prof. watching Springer for advice. Bitchin'.

You know, though I'm sure whatever Grant does with the Shi'Ar and Phoenix will be really good because I have a great deal of faith in him, I'm a bit disappointed that he's going to be using so many old characters and concepts. I was hoping we'd be seeing more entirely new situations and characters.

I was home over the past few days, and I was looking at all of my old Claremont X-Men's from the mid 80s, and was impressed by how well they stood up. As much of a hack as he is now, I'm still very impressed by the steady stream of good ideas that he had between 1978 and 1988. Once Lee came on, it was downhill from there, but hey...

It's funny, I don't remember liking the Rachel Summers character as much as I did before rereading that whole period of time when she was more or less the main character in the comic...

[YNH] - I think the point is that Grant's comments may have been misunderstood to mean that the character has the powers of a bomb, when in fact he meant she only looks like the Human Bomb.

I'm reserving judgement, personally, because Grant's ideas often sound screwy when summarised like this but are great in execution (which makes him the exact opposite of 90% of comics writers).

Just going on the article, friends:

Says power, not costume. But it may be the scribe who got it wrong, of course.

I realize you asked for an answer from Jack specifically, but dammit, I want to be a member of the students of obscure comics history, alongside Ray, Grant and Jack. Sucking up...go!

Left to right - Black Condor, Phantom Lady, Uncle Sam, Doll Man, The Ray, and ...THE HUMAN BOMB! KABOOM!

I'm guessing that lady Uncle Sam is carrying is called "Wonder Woman."

All this, and I didn't even have to crack open my set of Who's Who.

What I'm saying, [YNH], is that the scribe did get it wrong. I was at the X-men panel, and Morrison didn't say anything about the Muslim girl's powers - just that, as pointed out before, she'd be covered from head to toe - "like the human bomb".

This is exasperating. Nothing like poor journalism to create a truly frustrating itch.

Klint:

Did he? I thought those comments were in reference to Wolverine, and "doing something with his healing factor that no one had ever thought of before".

Personally, I'm going with the starfish idea my brother concocted.

And I like the idea that Emma's powers have mutated into something radically different. The "losing all empathy/humanity when she activates her powers" thing sounds really good. Grant's tapping into that whole Snow Queen bitch vibe that's kinda hung around the character since her inception, but 's never been fully realized.

I'm waiting for her to try it on with Cyk.

Watch that tight arse lose all control of its 'functions' - it's gonna get messy.

It may not be Jean who has an affair......

regarding the muslim character, its not just that he is sexualising the other, but also would be getting into the very purpose of the yashmak as well. if it is used as a tool to make the character appear more attractive, surely as a device of islam it is failing.

isnt that interesting enough?

I never saw this thread, and thank god I'm seeing it now. Did Grant Morrison sic a bear on me telepathically from Scotland? And then did he further terrorize me by asking me to represent it visually in my first issue of New X-Men? Beak does resemble me a little...

Addressing the new costumes' "florescent-ness" Morrison said he dressed them to look like municipal workers. He reasoned everyone would ignore them because people would figure they're there to collect the garbage or dig a ditch, and that's why they have the big yellow florescent X's.

Minor as it may seem, I thought this was one of Morrison's best modifications. It's too bad the "flourescent-ness" seems not to have stuck. Since the end of the Imperial arc colorists have mostly returned to coloring the costumes dull primary yellow instead of the original flourescent dayglo, which more or less eliminates that "municipal worker" association.

And then there's the X-Men in Uncanny, who appear to be allowed, by some quirk of Prof X's uniform rules, to basically dress like a bunch of PVC clad nu-metallers...Including Bobby Drake, who, as he keeps going on about being the oldest of the bloody X-Men in that book, really ought to be dressing a bit more maturely. Well, either that, or his character should be explicitly depicted as a Bono-like 'no, really, I do look young enough to wear this' celebrity-type.

Yeah, Iceman atarted out with the best costume of any of the Uncanny redesigns and now looks like the savage offspring of the backstreet boys and coal chamber like all the other Uncanny types. He was originally wearing the school trousers, a Hawaian shirt and a leather jacket in badicly a "fuck off" to the dress code.

(That and much like Xavier is drawn like Morison, Iceman was drawn like writer Joe Casey, hence the everpresent sunglasses.)
