by a bizarre quirk of fate, i appear to be spending the next few days in swansea. does anyone know the city? a good place to hang out on my own? or should i rip up my train tix and cut my losses, and sit in cafes in london (which is probably all i'll do there).

Not familiar with the city myself, but I did turn up this tourist info. site: Welcome to Wales' Golden City! (apparently).

Looks like they've got plenty of interesting places to visit, at least.

i would hazard a guess that that had something to do with the new 'marina district'. it sounds very san francisco!

Swansea's the closest thing I've got to a 'home city'..

It's the nicest urban area in South-West Wales .. but then, that's not saying much..

What it is at this time of year(hopefully) is very sunny .. so your best bet might be to get along to all the nice beaches 'on the Gower' as they say..

umm... <racks brain to think of nice things, as I do want to defend the place> .. there was an arts cinema at the university last time I looked, but I've never actually been there .. the Multiplex is a Multiplex, but I do have many good memories of going there..

The branch of Waterstones is particularly good - has quite a few weird books and is managed by a really nice hippy guy (unless they sacked him).

Sadly, there's little in the way of good independent/alternative shops .. books, records etc. are all best got from the chains..

The Mumbles (seaside place just down the road from Swansea) is a fucking nice place .. not for any specific reason .. it just is..

People live in a place called The Mumbles? Wonderful. An ancient Welsh settlement populated only by fisher folk with poor enunciation? I want to see it...

And if you feel like a drunken night of self annihilation there is always "the mumbles mile" of pubs and clubs...

Good God man! & I had been thinking, "poor shortfatdyke, trapped in Swansea..."

I must give Wales another try. We didn't get on last time.

hmmm, swansea. Cardiff born and bred, meself (though now i'm a lahndahner), so all i have to fall back on is the old Bluebirds' chant "Attack, attack, attack the Swansea Jacks". isn't petty rivalry great?

but yeah, i second Rizla's recommendations of the Gower and Mumbles, i had lots of happy trips there in me yoof. quite literally as i happens, my first lsd experience was had while watching the sun set over Llangenydd, a little surfy place in the Gower.... ahh sweet memories
