TANK GIRL!

i guess i was far too young to know about her when she was huge, but recently i got a few of her comics and then the movie was on comedy central (shitty film, but i loved it), not to mention the emergence of gorillaz. so the stars seem to be telling me that now is the time to chop most of my hair off, again, have a sex change and become reborn as Tank Girl.

i've got a few of the early deadlines (#4 & 7 to be exact, does this mag still exist and if so does it suck?) and the second issue of "the odyssey." now in excitement for watching the film i was looking at lots of Tank Girl websites, and some of these people seem to think that the newer Tank Girl comics are sacriligous. but as far as i can tell the addition of peter milligan into a winning formula can only make it better.

feelings about Tank Girl? did she change your life? or to ask a broad question "what's the deal with Tank Girl?"

You can get paperbacks of the collected Hewlett/Martin Tank Girl comics, which are great, though if you can track down the old b&w ones that's even better (I don't think they work so well in colour).

Haven't seen the film - I tried but I had a pirated copy which was unwatchable.

and I do love her... sigh.

Hewlett weas recently interviewed in Q magazine (the CD looked ok, ok?) and he said that just before the film deal came around he was getting really bored with it and thinking of killing her off.Interesting eh?Also said watching the movie with the sound turned down is great.

Can't say I've read much of them but the artwork always looked cool and whil lori petty's voice does my bleedin head in, it was still a bit of a larf .

My only experience of Tank Girl comes from picking up a TPB in Waterstones one day and giggling at a rather funny pisstake of The Smiths. But i was unable to investigate further, as the shop was closing and they threw me out.

deadline- the mag that launched tankgirl on the masses closed down in '95 around the same time tankgirl the movie floped. This was a pity cos it was a fun mag that combined music and comics in a cool way

>>>You can get paperbacks of the collected Hewlett/Martin Tank Girl comics,<<<

Not any more you can't - they've long since gone out of print, as far as I'm aware.

>>>Hewlett weas recently interviewed in Q magazine....said watching the movie with the sound turned down is great.<<<

He's mellowed considerably since the film first came out , then - I remember reading several years ago that he absolutely hated the film ("the negatives should be boiled in urine" quoth he) and was so disgusted by the experience that he decided never to do Tank Girl comics again.

Can't say I blame him - the film really was a worthless piece of shit...

Oh, and Deadline magazine had a lot of great strips in it. Turned a bit crap near the end, though.

Man, I was totally expecting to be disappointed by the movie and I loved it.

I think the difference is all in expectations.

It had Devo. And Ice T in a kangaroo costume. And Lori Petty lipsynching to Joan Jett and Paul Westerberg singing Cole Porter in a musical revue. That was fun. Her voice was all wrong, yeh.

i loved the comics, no that is wrong i lllluuurrrrrrrrrrrved the comics, even when they got all flakey and experimental towards the end, i waited a very very long time for the film, and when it came out it was so shit it was liked being kicked in the nuts. Kinda lost intrest after that.

btw did you know there was a Tank Girl RPG? books crap but hewlitt does the illustration.

Much as it pains me to disagree with Cameron who Knows Comics, the movie rocked as only bad cinema can. I have the video - I vote we have a BarbeTankGirl night sometime...

Back in the knife draw, Booga. I say, is it possible for you to post to a single thread without throwing in some unrequired bitchy aside?

Actually, just this once that wasn't a bitchy aside. Cameron knows a lot more about comics than I or most of the people on this board, and also has a very different perspective on them, since he works in the industry and knows a lot of the people the Comics section talks about on a personal level.

I happen to think that to describe "Tank Girl" the movie as "worthless" is incorrect, or at least contentious, even if "piece of shit" is probably justifiable. No criticism of Cameron was implied, only his critical stance.

A little eager to show how crazy and iconoclastic you are, little snowflake?

Now that was bitchy.

Yeah, alright, "worthless" is an exaggeration. I was using hyperbole to make my point. Shan't do it again.

Jesus.

I like the animated bits. Whole film should have been done that way.

Or animated bits interspersed with images of Malcolm MacDowell pulling a funny face, then back to the animated bits...that would have been cool.

Yes!
And stock footage of real kangaroos, and Australian tanks.

That is a very fine idea.

I'll contribute my Pink Flamingos video to such a worthy endeavour...

As someone who has every tank girl story ever published (to the best of my knowledge), I thought the film was great. The continuity errors, atrocious acting and frequent lack of humour were completely in keeping with what made the strip so fun. Tank Girl the comic was never objectively very good and it's quite right that the film wasn't either. Of course, it's not being very good is not a worthy reason not to love it in a very special way that unfortunately won't lead to babies...

>>>It had Devo. And Ice T in a kangaroo costume. And Lori Petty lipsynching to Joan Jett and Paul Westerberg singing Cole Porter in a musical revue. <<<

It also had something that I'd never condemn any other film for having: too much plot, complete with a real name and - ugh - origin story for TG. Malcolm MacDowell as evil dictator villain. Kangaroos (in AMERICA) genetically bred for the military.

In trying to explain everything, they ruined it.

And, just to clear things up, addressed to the Haus of Thorns tribute band that is Mr. Rolleyes, not you.
