I read it, and I'm not too impressed, although I loved both of his collections ("civilwarland" more so). When I first read his stuff, I thought he was a genius, but he seems to be banging his critique of consumer culture into the ground now. The reason I liked Civilwarland was, in addition to the aforementioned critique, which you can find in any number of young white male authors (indeed, that's all they write about), he also conveyed a deep sense of character and empathy for his characters and their situations, which most contemporary authors have a hard time with. But if I read one more short story by him or anyone else equating modern society with a theme park cut Jean Baudrillard to little pieces and stuff him down the author's throat. |
