There was a book that came out in the late 80s. It was a vividly illustrated natural history of the far future, when today's birds and animals had evolved into different things. The only illustration I recall is a penguin-whale, a killer whale that had evolved from a penguin.

Any ideas? I'm 80% sure it came from Britain.

It may have marketed science or science fiction.

Dougal Dixon's After Man : A Zoology of the Future has what appears to be a penguin-whale hybrid on the back cover. It's still in print and available through Amazon. Sorry, no link because the address looked long and daunting.

Hey presto!

There's 20-odd sample pages there, which should be enough to see if it's the one you want, grant.
