I'm a bit of an amazon virgin and i have a few questions for the seasoned pros amongst you.

Basically i want to order a book from amazon us (uk doesn't have it) the delivery time says 2-3 days - how will this be affected by being in the wrong country?

does anyone have any amazon horror stories to tell me?

Add about a week or ten days, assuming they've got it in stock. I think that if you're sending to a mailing address in the UK, their ordering system will look into their other European branches too; a couple of times, I've had packages that've originated outside the US end up on my doorstep. Be warned that you could get stung for import duty - I once had to pay some cash at the post office before I could get some CDs I'd ordered. That was a couple of years ago now, but still...

Are you sure you can't get it in the UK? What are you after, sleaze?

Divine invasions by lawrence Sutin - a biography of Philip K Dick - i searched for it on amazon UK and failed to find a match

I've ordered from Amazon UK twice in the past few months (both times for products only available in the UK...), and both times it was for products listed as "dispatched in 1-2 days", and they arrived here in NY about four/five1 days after being shipped with standard shipping..

So that's how it works in this direction...I've no idea what UK customs/mail service is like, but hey, it can't be too much worse than ours...

You can get it from whsmith.co.uk here. It's £14.13, not including postage, but may take up to four weeks to get.

I've ordered stuff from WHS in the past and they've just failed to deliver and reimbursed me in vouchers too (i'd originally paid in them) so i'm none too keen to turn to their internet service.

Sleaze...I've got a copy of 'In Pursuit of Valis'....Selections from the Exegesis....If you havn't read a copy...I think it's quite hard to get hold of in the uk...Let me know if you fancy lending it...

Here is the puzzle of VALIS. In VALIS I say, I know a madman who imagines that he saw Christ; and I am that madman. But if I know that I am a madman I know that in fact I did not see Christ. Therefore I assert nothing about Christ. Or do I ? Who can solve this puzzle? I say in fact only that I am mad. But if I say only that, then I have made no mad claim; I do not, then, say that I saw Christ. Therefore I am not mad.

Yeah, this happened to me last year .. I still have a morbid fear of postmen banging on my door at 9 in the morning demanding large amounts of cash and then informing me that "this internet thing, it's a bloody con! They say it's free and look what happens!"

That hasn't happened to me with any book orders yet, but I have had to pay import duty on a couple of overseas DVD orders. It seems to depend on whether the postie can be bothered or not.

I've had a couple of problems ordering with Amazon.com (US). The delivery time has never been all that accurate, with one 'we can usually find this item in 4-6 weeks' order arriving within the week and a couple of '2-3 days' orders taking anything up to two months. The only other thing I'd be wary of is recieving damaged or incorrect goods, as having to send them all the way back to the US and then waiting on the replacements can take aaaages.
