Mental Widgets

The latest issue of Fortean Times (well, "latest" as in "latest for me" considering that I'm in the U.S. and the zine ships from the UK with a Belgian return address), in the letters section, contains mentions from multiple people regarding a mental trick where you imagine an alarm clock. You set it to a specific time and you go to sleep. Supposedly you will wake up at that exact time as if the mental alarm clock has awoken you. One letter even mentions a deaf dude using this in place of a real alarm clock due to the fact that he would not be able to hear a real alarm clock.

Anybody here have any experience with this or any other type of mental widget? "Mental widget" being a mental trick used to get a specific result. This is one example. Another one would be, if in pain, imagining ice cold water being poured over the area of the body with the pain thus numbing the area.

I can normally wake up around a certain time if I need to (usually fifteen minutes or so beforehand). It's not something I've conciously trained to do (I don't have a Jack Reacher-esque ability to have a mental clock running for example).

But I am a fairly time-aware person which may well feed into it.

One letter even mentions a dead dude using this in place of a real alarm clock due to the fact that he would not be able to hear a real alarm clock.

Dead dude? Could you explain that in a bit more detail?
